easier and cheaper to just get a reman head for them , heads on the old cummins are easy to replace
spsauerland Thanks this. -
I understand it use to be easy way of doing it was getting re man heads from cummins...but at 1250 bucks a head exchange-plus 117 a head for new bolts and 500 bucks for the top end gasket set they kinda got ya bent over. And cummins says they dont even have the heads in stock... tooling is 700 bucks and new cups are 95 dollars

Only issue i had was a injector missing. Pulled injectors and had a couple of the copper cups that cracked and puked antifreez in the cylinder. Motor was recon by cummins in 2004- its got 165xxx original miles. This trash fuel is hard on the old big cam injectors. Thats why im having the question of the cups. Seems everone use to just exchange the heads. At like 250 exchange back n the day. But man they sure don't want these old engines out here anymore. 1250 ec head exchange and aint even got any in stock

do a google search for those heads , about $500 to $600 for a reman head , reused head bolts many times if they were in good shape. check after market for head gasket kits

The heads have to come off to replace the injector cups. There is a special threaded tool that clamps the cup in place and creates the seal against the casting while the top of the cup is rolled and expanded. Then the threaded tool is removed and the sealing surface where the injector seals against the cup is cut to the right injector protrusion.
pup Thanks this. -
Never changed out any injector cups out myself, but I have reused the head bolts with no problem.
Make sure the threads are clean, put oil on the threads, and both sides of the washer before installing….pup, High Stepper and AModelCat Thank this. -
