Ok. Exit 13 off of I-84. I use to hate going there but this was way back, when we mostly had to do down stack, restack, and all that other crap.

It really depends on your company, your capable speed and the time you need to get there. Yeah, Google doesn't show a complete picture, but considering the areas you'll be driving through congestion wise, I-5 looks faster hour wise, but it's not. If your truck can do 70 mph or so, versus 55 mph, depending on load weight, you'll want to drive that 70 or even only 65 being fuel conscious, but you are only going to go 55 via CA, period or chance tickets, inspections, and lousy city traffic where you have more exposure to high risk drivers. I drive to avoid that. Weight of the load becomes another issue. Yes it's an indicator, and as you point out, i used to be a Swift driver, also, and you took the route they gave you back then, but then again, I was flatbed and most of the time, the route they gave and my own planning coincided. Maybe they just send vans the long way to time them better with the amount of time they have to wait at the shipper/receiver or to keep them occupied. :)
Anyway, as I pointed out, if he is given a route by the owner or mega, he has to follow it, barring unforseen detours from traffic issues.

I'm 3 hours away from the delivery point, and I have enough time to do a 34 before delivery. Yeah, the I-5 north was a mess near the truck bypass on Saturday morning, the 5 north was literally closed for awhile. Everything was being diverted to CA 14 if you took the truck bypass, which a lot of cars did, lots of trucks on the road side planning their next move. I kept going and ended up picking up the 58 to the 99 to the 5. Probably added at least 50 miles to the trip, but I kept moving while others sat.

So you added 50 miles to a route that was already 50 miles longer?
Did you buy California fuel? I hope not since it is a dollar higher than Nevada.
Most likely why they routed you up thru Nevada.

    CAXPT Thanks this.

I vote Nv. Just one night sleeping in the cool mountain air with the windows down on a quiet pull out will convince you ! Tonights a quarter moon plus lots of stars.

One of my fuel stops was the Pilot in Dunnigan, CA i-5, ex 554. Needed to fill my tanks, but the pumps cut off at 64 gallons. So now I'm in Oregon at the Flying J, ex 148 and the fuel here is not a bargain either, but I'll need to put in about 20 gallons just for the hell of it.
