Question for @AModelCat or any of u guys that know equipment.. Is there a certain way to jump start a piece of equipment thats wired in a series for 24v rather than your basic 12v parallel connection? I picked up a dead machine today and couldnt get it to jump start by just hooking positive and negative like you would normally jump a truck or car ..
Ended up just charging both batteries seperatly then hooked everything back up and it fired off

 

If all I have is a 12 volt source to boost the 24 volt system, I'll put the jumper leads across just the one battery closest (electrically) to the ground (assuming they're 12 volt batteries).

Leave it on there to charge it for a while, then when its time to start the machine I'll move the leads to the other battery. As long as you're only hooking the leads across a single 12 volt battery on the 24 volt machine you should be fine.

 

I had it hooked up positive lead on 1 battery and negative lead on the other battery...Sounds like that was the problem. I will try just doing 1 at a time next time...

Is it possible to jump it directly off the starter or no? I hooked positive lead to positive on starter and grounded out to the frame, but had no luck doing it that way either

 

If you have a 24 volt charger you can hook across a pair of 12 volt batteries hooked in series since they combine voltage to be 24 volts.

If its a 24 volt machine, it'll have 24 volts at the starter - no beuno if your boost source is 12 volt.

The joys of heavy equipment. My last service truck had a Re-Volt system installed. I could toggle either 12 or 24 volt for boosting. Super handy but not a cheap unit.

 

I'm glad atleast the batteries could hold a charge when I Let them charge up seperatly. Learned something new today, I appreciate the help brother

 

Biggest thing is knowing how its all wired up, either 12 or 24. Very easy to spike electronic components if you mix voltages. Blow ECMs, light bulbs, alternators etc. You've got it more or less figured out by the sounds of it.

 

I was a bit worried about messing up electronics. I have a test light with one of those Volt readouts on it and it was showing 22 volts when I put it on starter so I figured out I was working with 24 Volt pretty quick. But never jumped one of those systems before, didn't want to f something up, but now I know what to do next time

This just begs for a bad bump to send you grabbing to keep it frome hitting something on the way down and breaking the screeen. Had one get damaged that way, and that's when I bought a refurbished TND 720. Unfortunately, now that outer coating is sticky as hell maybe from the sun or time..not sure which.
