Hello, everyone.
Seems like a pretty good bunch on here! Really supportive.
I've already learned alot here just reading everybody's posts.
Just thought I'd introduce myself- my name's Brian and I'm off to CDL school on Feb. 1st. I s'pose at 36 I'm a bit of an old dog to be learning new tricks, but here goes.
Why am I learning to drive a truck? Well I've considered it a few times over the years, but never acted on it.
I was an auto mechanic for almost 15 years and still mess around with cars (I guess my screen name makes that obvious- I like them ol' Valiants and Darts!) The summers were killing me- 95+ degree heat and 95%+ humidity in the armpit like climate here in the Ohio River valley. I could crank 'em out in the winter, but of course that's the slow time...
Then I spent a couple of years working in an auto parts store- a total waste of time.
Well, not total- One thing I got to do there a few times was drive a delivery route (small van) to other stores. I really enjoyed that. Got me to thinking about truck driving again.
I talked to my girlfriend's brother, he's been a trucker for the past seven years and loves it. He drove Over the Road for a couple years, then got a job driving a flatbed for a building materials company where he's home every night. He went through a company that trains, but said he wouldn't do it that way if he had it to do again.
That's when the plan started to come together. I went to the Doctor and made sure I wouldn't have any issues passing a DOT exam. I've saved some money and borrowed some more to pay for school up front, so then I can (hopefully) pick from several companies when I'm done with school. I figure that I'll be driving Over the Road for a while to get some experiance, then find something local (or mabey regional) later.
I'm thankful for Christy (my GF) who is behind me 100% on this. Sure, we'll miss each other while I'm out on the road, but we can still talk every night. My folks are still really supportive, too. Everybody says go for it. Christy and her son have 3 dogs already, so I know they'll take good care of Minnie (my ol' half-dachshund-half everything else mutt). Mabey after a little while I can take Minnie with me. She's a laid back old doggie, so she'd probably do well in a truck.
Well I'm rambling, ain't I?
Everybody stay safe out there,
Brian
Well, here I go...

Welcome to the Forum Brian, Thanks for introducing yourself. Great plan you have paying for your training outright. Check out the Trucking Schools Board ask some questions, there then maybe you can do some calling around to the schools and find out pricing. My husband has been a trucker now for 11 years. I am sure things will be fine between you and girlfriend with it. Back when my husband went into school, we had no home phone. But i had a pager lol. He went to NEI Truck Driver Training back then. Would leave on a bus on Thursday and be back home Sunday Night, did that for 4 months, thats how long their training class was back then, sad they are no longer around I worked as a waitress to pay the bills while he went to school. (Hard to find a job to let you have off Thursday through Sunday lol) Whoda thunk it ..... a waitress .... and a trucker ....together??? LMAO!!! (but we had been married 10 years already lol)
He would page me though when he was on the road. He had the phone numbers of all 4 payphones up at the convenience store down the road from us. He would page me and I would run down to the store and wait for one of the phones to ring. So believe me, if ya wanna keep in touch, you can always find a way
GOOD LUCK!!!!JustSonny and kickin chicken Thank this. -
