KCJ, I just started with Watkins/Shepard 5 days ago, going through the orientation right now. From the 10-15 drivers I've talked to here in NC, all my research (concerning companies to work for VS. companies to stay away from) has paid off. I think I'm going to be glad I started my career here.

Oh, and welcome to 'the boards'. Hope to bump into you again soon.

good luck to you kcj,. hope you make enough money to be happy,. 'course most newbies i ever talk to still have shiney eyes, and can't wait to start the motor and shift some gears,.this is what most large oufits are counting on,. new drivers just happy to be pushing down on the throttle, and looking in the mirrors and chatting on the radio,. can always tell a newbie on the radio, they are happy to bond, happy to talk,. just dying to add in some trucker type lingo to their talk, real happy to share some cute little story, that to them was so cool, but to an seasoned driver wasn't much at all, but funny anyway, kinda like watching your kid want to tie his own shoelaces for the first time with no help from dad,..
after you,ve woken up a few thousand times in the bunk, had a few thousand showers in some institutional bathroom, eaten a few thousand crappy choke and puke meals, been lied to and cheated a few thousand times by the very people you,re out there making money for,.after being stopped for the thousandth time by the LEO with the bad attitude who's wife ran away with a trucker,or who's dog was run over by a truck when he was a kid, and you are the thousandth trucker he's gonna make pay for it,. after counting your money a few thousand times and realising that the money just doesn't buy what it used to,.after you,ve polished your older truck for the thousandth time and counted the thousands of loving dollars you put into it, to get it finally looking cool and paid for, only to be told its now too old,. mebbe you might have some advice for the newbies coming behind you,..
Be safe, and don't let the diesel smoke get in your eyes and blind you from the reality of this game,..

Original phantom 309 and Starcommander thanks for the welcome and words of wisdom. You guys have obviously paid your dues in trucking. I certainly respect any and all advice from guys like you with your experience. I am trying to go into this career change with an open mind and realize trucking is not the most desirable profession out there but for me I think it will work. I'm not planning on getting rich but just making an honest living in a tough profession.
