i own a truck that i'm putting a driver in. My question is should i pay him a percentage after fuel & insurance is deducted from the gross for the week? (2) pay him percentage after just fuel is deducted from gross? (3) pay him percentage before fuel is deducted from the gross? I trying to be fair as possilbe without cheating him or myself. What is the most common way on paying a driver?

You pay your driver on the gross of what the truck made. If the truck made $3000 before expenses they should get their percentage of that amount.

Big John... Were you looking over my shoulder?

I was just going to tell him the same thing using the same $3000.00 number! So if he tells his driver that he is paying 30%... That is $900.00 to the driver!

Just ask notarps how that worked out for him as a driver....

Dude, pay a percentage of the gross paid to the truck if you desire to keep a driver in that truck.

I disagree. If you want to do that instead of paying him 30% pay him 27% of the gross and if his fuel mileage is above a certain amount and his idle time is below a certain amount then he gets a 3% bonus.

Always pay off what the truck actually gets gross, not the amount before broker fees, or company percentage. You can figure out with a little math what percentage will equal out to what you deem a fair mileage pay amount.

You could offer something like 1/2 percent extra is a certain MPG is reached.

Hell just make him a partner and tell him he gets 40% but he has to pay his share of the operating cost, then you won't need to pay for workers comp on him or her. :biggrin_2559: Thats how the bigs boys at Prime got started but they just call it a lease.

Be like Arrow in the last months, and don't bother to pay your driver at all. Not like the Pielstickers are actually gonna do hard time operating like that.

Take care of your driver and lets hope your driver will take care of you.

PM Southernpride he runs five or six trucks and has drivers in them. He should have a straight and honest answer for you.
