Well it appears there two styles of aftercoolers that bolted to the heads of a small cam engine. I’m adding an aftercooler, pulse manifold, turbo and crossover pipe, to this soon to be 160 CPL engine. I’ve got access to either style of aftercooler. Here’s a pic of each style. Which should I go with? From my experience the, “tin top“ style cooler was on nearly all Big Cams until series 4, low flows.
What style of aftercooler for small cam Cummins

@Dino soar your phones ringing.

The tin one is the better choice. Much easier to service if you do need to take it apart & reseal it. Which may not be a bad idea anyways.
The tin cross over pipe to the turbo can split open underneath so for that the aluminium one is the one to have.Dino soar, spsauerland, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
Speaking of, “cross over pipe”, there several different choices. Some are angle towards the front of the engine, some are slightly angled and some are straight across. Some tubes come out of the side of the aftercooler(solid aluminum style) instead of the top and this doesn’t allow for the use of Jakes.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

If you can find one off an NTC-475 go with that!
Rideandrepair and mile marker 27 Thank this. -
I’m very limited on the amount small cams and big cams, for parts around here and not even sure I’ve ever seen a NTC 475. I’ve been getting some accessories from a local sawmiller, who’s got about 15 Cummins engine for parts.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Could you do air-to-air? @Ruthless did ata using a manifold off a N14.
-
Air to air can be done, but the idea of the after cooler is that it sends warm air heated by the coolant into the cylinder to keep the cylinder temperatures higher at idle. It is easier and quicker for the truck to warm up and the cylinder temperatures will stay higher longer.
The n 14 intake could be done but you lose that aspect of the after cooler. If the engine is highly modified it may help to keep egts down but most of the reports that I've read are that the after cooler works just about as well and the benefits of it outweigh using the air to air.Coffey, spsauerland and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -
So why do they do ata instead, and why was a 3406b ata 425, but aftercooled it was only a 400?Coffey Thanks this.
