Budd/ hub pilot mixup

Do not mix those two mounting systems and work them. They will come loose and fail. The new hub pilot system is hard to keep tight already and doesn’t need anymore help caused by a mismatch. Wheel-offs with the new system are a real thing.
If it is a ultra low mileage hobby truck that has no chance of seeing high torque and high load to the rears then maybe ok. But I’d be checking them regularly and the only way i’d personally do it is if they were some rare wheel like the old 5 hole Alcoa’s or something like that. If they are just standard everyday 10 hole or steel wheels just Sell or Trade the stud pilots for the right hub pilot wheels. That way you have the piece of mind that they will not fall off.

 

It can technically work as you seen. Later versions of ball and seat wheels used the 11.25" pattern and 8.72" center hole the same as hub piloted wheels. So the wheel centers up and rests on hub just like a hub piloted wheels. Your not supposed to do it, but it does work.

 

But it won’t work at all, the other way around. Aren’t the hub centers different diameters?

 

Same measurements on bore 8.72"=220MM, bolt circle is same @ 11.25"=285.75MM. Alcoa is the same way. Sure it's cheaper to set die for forge for one bore size. Aftermarket pickup wheels are the same way.

 

I have seen a guy machine spacers to put in the budds to make them "truer" hub-piloted wheels.

 

Gotcha. Thought you were mentioning the hub, and thought the moving wheel may have made the marks mentioned. Glad you got em swapped
