Off road it pays to watch. Rocks and roots on bush roads make the helm a hazard again. If your steer is down in the goo when you’re turning and you shove it up against a stump or boulder hard enough they can take off on you too. What you can’t see gets you the most, it’s like running it into a curb with your foot in it.

    It's a violation of RCW 46.37.375(1)
    (1) Construction of steering control system. The steering control system shall be constructed and maintained so that no components or attachments, including horn activating mechanism and trim hardware, can catch the driver's clothing or jewelry during normal driving maneuvers.

It seems to be a basic common sense code.

    I'm confused Moose
    Are they illegal or not?
Unsafe operation of a vehicle is not a Federal offence?

There is no federal law other than the OSHA rule about material and earth-moving equipment. My last comment was about Washington State Law.

    I get that,
but that law seems to apply to manufacturers.
The truck builders can't just do whatever they want, everything has to go through due process and be approved.
A spinner not installed properly is not approved by the manufacturers or legislature and therefore illegal.
    Loopholes do exist though.
Any case law on these ''spinners'?

“Constructed and maintained” Maintained is the key word.

Adding a spinner in Washington can get you a ticket :)

Some forum members have received tickets in WA perhaps you can dig those up for a look. I also worked with a driver who got ticketed in WA..was something like a $150 fine. I’d ask him what the actual charge was but we aren’t talking to each other anymore, lol

    I have
I have a ‘71 narrow nose hood and cab in a storage trailer. The hood has the single 7” headlights instead of the twin 5”’s. The truck was pulling an end dump and laid over in ‘89. High wind gust caught it lifted during the first big US 281N and loop 1604 expansion project in San Anyonio. It twisted the frame but did no damage to cab or hood other than destroying left mirror. The old man driving it pulled the 290 and trans and one drive axle. It had Freightliner spring ride. My friend bought it from him to use the cab to replace his ‘75 that was rusting pretty good. That never happened and I ended up with it. I cut the frame rails into 48” pieces and used them for racking leg bases to sit on the dirt ground behind shop to store parts and steel. I have an Aluminum frame with FL spring rears that is serialed to a ‘78 Star I’ve been thinking about putting the cab and hood on.

You don’t see the narrow grill Stars anymore.

Most of the Stars down in these parts had the FL spring rears. The rubber block stuff was oilfield spec. and lots of those were around the Houston area. There were a pretty good number of aluminum cab Stars around Houston area too back then. I can only figure most became beer cans because you can’t find one anywhere now.

They are sold as driving aids for folks who have physical challenges, so I seriously doubt any state would want the liability that comes with violating the ADA.
