Hey guys, sorry to post to ask this, I have searched but can't really seem to find the right post to answer my questions. I bought a truck, need to get bobtail and physical damage insurance. All the quotes I keep getting every single company (progressive and a couple online quotes) are adding non-trucking liability. Would NTL be better to have than just bobtail? What companies offer quotes online without adding the NTL automatically that you apparently can't take off?

Non trucking liability is the technical name for "bobtail" insurance. It covers the liability of operating your truck whenever it is not being operated under dispatch, meaning at the direction of the motor carrier that has the primary insurance coverage on it.

NTL and bobtail are the same coverage.

Thank you for this. Guess that explains it. Progressive seems to be the only place that truly gives an online quote that isn't 2200 per month. Do you happen to know any place that does an actual online quote other than Progressive? Even they say they can't provide coverage if I'm not permanently leased somewhere. I will be, just haven't signed the lease yet.

I’m no insurance agent but doesn’t ntl would cover a trailer too ? As long as you are empty and not under carrier dispatch. Bobtail is just a tractor not under dispatch ?

This is what I thought myself too. But evidently not. I need the insurance for the lender to fund the deal. I'm waiting for great west to get back to me with quotes but so far it seems like I have to be leased somewhere to even get the coverage I need to drive the truck home and then to the carrier.

I was with great west, about a year ago their rates doubled in Maryland where I live. So away they went.

Progressive isn't too bad, at 300k CSL anyway. $257 a month, just says I have to be leased. Otherwise they want way more to give me basically state auto minimum on the truck.

I used to be with Progressive, but I left them for a better rate. You will need to get a lease for insurance and tags if you don't have your own authority.

Well how is one to get the truck to their house and to a carrier without insurance then? Doesn't make sense. Need insurance to get the lease. And need the lease to get the insurance.

Unfortunately, no I do not have any online quote sources for you. Commercial auto is still a call and talk to an agent type of business because there are so many variables that need to be considered before an accurate quote can be generated.

All underwriters will require you to be leased to a carrier before binding a non-trucking or bobtail liability policy and a physical damage policy. They are all categorized as secondary insurance products, meaning they need a primary policy from a motor carrier responsible for safety to be valid. You may be able to get short term commercial auto to allow you to apply for a hunter's permit, which is a temporary apportioned credential used for when you are in-between leases and need to move your truck from one place to another. Progressive does not write that type of insurance, you will need a real underwriter like Great West or similiar.
