It's no big deal. They will ask you about that every time. Our DOT physician knows I drink and smoke. He also knows I'm overweight too. Lol. Most truck drivers drink, smoke, and are overweight anyway
Looking for answer

Don’t sweat it, if dinking alcohol (away from the truck, of course) and/or smoking were disqualifications for truck driving jobs, there would hardly be any trucks on the road!
snowlauncher, Geekonthestreet, bryan21384 and 3 others Thank this. -
The DOT doctor is not your friend or partner in health. He's the man that can end your job based on what info you give him and what measurements are taken during the exam.
bryan21384 and Boondock Thank this. -
Thanks for the answers. I just wish it wasn’t noted all over my physical for employers and everyone to see. Live and learn I guess, I suppose it will be on there for 2 years but the next time I do one I won’t disclose that information for sake of interrogation and notes written up like it’s a health problem. Just makes me mad that I put it on there, I have been stressing out about it but some of these reply’s ease it a little bit. My instructor said the same thing about most drivers smoking but I’m still kicking myself about it

Wish you had been a member on here earlier so we could have warned you.
I know one driver that had Type 1 diabetes and always got a 2 yr. card because he didn't say anything.
He always brought a small lunch box to work that's where he kept his insulin refrigerated. Everyone thought it was his lunch.
They guy was a fanatic about keeping his diabetes under control.Last edited: Aug 13, 2022
Boondock Thanks this. -
Unless this school is sponsored or has heavy ties to the company that you plan to hire onto, then you’ll probably have to take another physical.

One of the problems with type 1 diabetes that is not so much an issue today is insulin. The old natural insulin while it worked 99% of the time sometimes it caused all sorts of problems. Even with the new insulins, it's dangerous to dose without knowing your blood sugar at the time.
As I understand it the FMCSA is allowing diabetics to drive. This is the thing. As someone who knows how easy it is to take too much insulin if you are a type 1 diabetic and don't have an MCSA-5870 on file if you go into "diabetic shock" while driving? I hope you don't do any damage or hurt people.
Every day I have to balance my insulin with the foods I eat. How easy is it? About 2 months ago I asked Keri to give me a shot in my hip. I take so many shots I have to rotate my injection areas. She was not careful and did not inject the right amount from the pen. We had lunch and afterward I sit down to make some comments on TTR. It took about an hour but I went into insulin shock and Keri had to get my Glucagon out and give me another shot.
Drivers, if you are a type 1 diabetic watch those blood sugar levels and keep Glucagon on the truck. That Glucagon might well save your life!Chinatown Thanks this.
