Maybe a ridiculous question but I love collecting tools and hate paying someone else to do something for me when usually the tools are just a little more then what they shop would charge.
As for HP tuning what software is used on various engines.
I'm not talking about factory software, we have a local guy who can tuning about every engine brand but won't give out any info as to his software, where can I find and who manufacturers such software?

You are talking about factory software, since that’s what you need to make the changes.

Are you talking about just uploading programs to the ECM or actually making custom programs yourself?

99% sure you need the manufacturer's software to reflash the ECM. As to actually making custom files, I can't help you there. That's something beyond what I do on a daily basis.

I don't know that you can tune any of the heavy duty engines without the factory software. They've got them pretty locked up.

Lots of shops will rent theirs out for time blocks or even days for the right amount of money.

That's all you're doing on a CAT file. You adjust the trim settings and injector codes. You just do it repeatedly after each dyno run until you like the results. Nobody is actually editing the files literally with a hex editor.

There are people who claim to be able to, they're never willing to show and tell though.

Don't forget you'd need a test engine or test truck. Be prepared for it to go Ka-pow! if you adjust something too far.
