O/O looking into getting something more specialized

    Hi been in trucking 6 years now and doing deck work 4 years. Majority did stepdeck work and flat only around 6 months.

    I've been getting the itch to do something more specialized but also baby steps at same time. I have my own authorities and its just me so 95 percent of work is broker and got 2-3 guys that call me for a load usually just some metal nothing fancy.

    I was thinking of getting into lowboy or double drop work. Been planning to sick to tandem only for now.

    One of my questions is if it is still possible to pickup general freight such as lumber, metals, and other palletized goods if I need headhaul or backhaul?

    Is there anything different in maintenence/cost wise?

    Also I see there a lot of different type rgn, lowboys, dropdecks.
    What would be a "beginner" type of deck?

    Why buy a specialized trailer to haul non specialized products?

    Sounds like you need to a stepdeck to be honest….

    I was looking at alot of backhauls into my area are specialized but most of the loads going out are not and I mean every direction. Especially lumber being one of the biggest headhauls from my area

    With a tandem axle RGN you will be looking at an empty weight of at least 35K if you are anywhere properly equipped with chains (long and short), binders, shackles, etc. If your head-haul out of your neighborhood is weight intensive and paid by weight then a stepdeck at 30K or even 32K is a much better choice and you can haul a lot of OSOW freight on one.
