My friend has a 2000 model 8.3 ISC in his RV set at 330hp / 950ftlb torque. I scanned it for him before taking it to get serviced to make sure there were no codes, etc. Before taking it to get serviced it had the 90246.16 program file in the ecm, but after the service it now has the 90246.40 file in it. My question is: Did the mechanic just update the software to a newer file or is that a completely different file? I assume it's just the updated version, but I'm not as savvy on Cummins files. Thanks in advance!

That's what I assumed, but wanted to ask before I gave him an answer. Is it similar to older Cat files that have epa revisions in the newer ones? He also asked me about getting an uprate in the power. There's a 350/1050 file within the same parts group that we're aware of. Would that work since it's in the same family and parts group?

The suffix change on all Cummins is only for update changes or fixes to the original file.

Just make sure your trans is rated for the higher torque. Should be good go.

Sounds good and that's what I've always been told. You're good to go with an uprate as long as the parts group and family are the same. I ran the transmission tag already, after he mentioned it. It says 400 hp / 1200 torque max, so he should be good. There are several files as the one in it says "generic". I know there were some like brand specific, rv, fire truck, etc. Which would be best?

I’m not super familiar with the RV files. I would contact Cummins with the CPL and see what they recommend. They are usually pretty helpful.

I’ve got one last question. If you have a 90246.16 file currently in there, is it okay to put a 90956.16 as long as the critical parts list is the same?

We tried flashing it and it was a success. Thanks again!
