ok, so iv been driving now for 2 years, and when i first started i was in a volvo, went and got me a 29 classic from one of the truck stops.
it worked just perfect, i was able to get out about 5 miles around my truck, and i could hear guys talking as far as 15-20 miles..
now, im in a freightliner and im lucky to hear the guy sitting next to me at the truck stop, or him hear me...
today, i stopped at the cb shop in ohio, exit 99, huge cb shop, and the guy there was super nice!!! really helpful, however, i was in a big rush ( almost walked out with out my stuff!!) but anyway, i got a wilson 2000 and a mount, and 30ft of coax, im in a cascadia now, and gonna mount it on the grab bar on the back the sleeper, which iv read on here, and have heard others talk about that being a good spot.. now that im going to start this new " cb chapter " of the trucking world, im thinking it would be cool to learn about it all... iv heard and read somewhere that i need a good ground for the antenna... tho i dont know what that means, and didnt even think of asking the guy at the cb shop today...
so one of many questions is, what and how do i give my antenna a good ground??
another question would be about SWR... what exactly is swr and how do i adjust it?
as for my cb, its not tuned up or anything, just a basic 29 classic right out of the box, but im thinking of stopping by his shop next time i go past, he has radios that are peaked and tuned, but i dont know if his prices are good, over priced or under priced... based on this guys shop, im betting that he does good work, and dose not wast our time or his, and that his prices would be either average to others or below average...
anyway, i think what im looking for is something along the lines of
" CB Set Up For Dummies "
im new too all of this cb stuff, i want to be able to talk to others and hear them, but not people that are 20 miles away.... also.. i noticed in the other posts a lot of letters, and words that someone..like me..just wouldnt understand... so can we use terms that a " Dummie " would understand...
thanks guys for your help in advance..

VSWR ( AKA SWR )
What this is is how much power comes back down the coax for how much you send up it. Normal coax is 50 ohms and a normal 1/4 wave wip is also 50 ohms at its feed point so they should match very closely. if you put a 50 ohm resister on a coax and a SWR meter on the other end the meter will show a SWR of almost 1:1 .... same goes if your wip is really set up right.
Reasons for this wip not working right mostly comes from not enough or good enough grounding at 27 mhz you need about 9 foot of ground or what looks like 9 foot to the end of the coax. A frame of a truck should work.
LEGAL STUFF .....
Yea I know who cares ..... BUT under FCC rules you are limited as what you can run Simply put you have 4 watts 100% modulation and 40 ch that's it AND you can't blame the tech its your radio and your fine ....
So if someone gets into your radio and peaks it up it still needs to comply with the rules. ALSO there is no standard for a CB repairman no license is required. -
Well I'm assuming your talking about exit 99 on I-75 in OH at Movin on electronics? They are a good shoip with pretty good prices. They will tune your radio the right way ( no clipping and snipping ). You should have mounted the antenna while you were there and had them check and set your swr while there but I understand the being in a hurry thing.
Not sure how well that mount location will work for you unless you have a flattop sleeper and pull a flatbed. If your pulling a van or reefer and have a midroof or highrise sleeper you'll likely get way to much reflect to get a good swr which will cause you to have the same problems you have now. I would check with them on a good mounting location for the Cascadia as I'm not real familiar with those trucks. There # is 937-394-7338 -
thanks for the reply, both of you..
the cascadia has no place to mount an antenna, the mirriors on these trucks dont have the mirrior brackets, and i have talked to several cb shops and they all suggested that putting it on the grab bar on the sleeper would be the easiest and pretty much the only place to put it.
im in a condo sleeper and i pull a dry van, and iv told them all about my concern of having the same problem as im having now with the sleeper wall and the trl wall " blocking " and they told me thats it will not be the same as on the side of the truck with a mirror mount, but it will be better then the crap set up from the factory...
here is a pic of the cascadia so you have an understanding of what they look like. this is not my truck, but the same body..
yes thats the cb shop im talking about... i75 x99. nice people and very clean as well.
as soon as i told him that i needed 30ft of coax the first thing he said was " Cascadia huh? " putting it on the back of the sleeper?
soo... how do i attach this ground wire to the antenna??? putting it on the frame of the truck wont be an issue since its going right on the back of the sleeper.
thanks againAttached Files:

You ground the bracket itself, not the antenna. With the construction of todays trucks, I would make sure the grab bar is well grounded first. If the grab bar is painted, then you need to scrape the paint off were you are going to install the bracket.
Need to get the antenna as far away from the cab as possible. The best is to get it above the roof line as far as possible. This reduces the amount of reflect that you get which will drive SWR up and give you dismal performance. This is the reason why I would use a top loaded antenna rather then a mid or base loaded antenna such as the wilson 2000 or 5000. The wilson fiberglass will work much better since most of the windings are at the upper section of the antenna which would/should be above the roof line.
As far as peaking and tuning, a vast majority of CB radios are det up very poorly in the factories. This is due to mass production. People don't care what they are doing other then putting in their time and collecting a check. This is why I buy from shops that give the radio a once over and make sure it is on freq and doing what it was designed to do in the first place. The good shops do this for free. -
thanks Rat, the grab bar that i have it mounted to is not painted, and i just discovered a problem... the i have 3 garb bars on the rear, one where the steps are on the driver side, one on the exhaust pipe, both of which go up and down, and the thrid bar i have is for the air lines that go side to side, i tried to put it up on that one, and the top of the antenna was about a foot, give or take an inch or two, over the top of of the cab... so i put it on the grab bar on the driver side up as high as i can get it, and its roughly 4-5 inches below the roof line. so as you said, its as close to the top of the roof as i can get it... im going to take a pic and post it here in a few mins...
-
here are 2 pics of how its mounted, and how high it comes to the roof line, its kinda hard to see the tip top of the antenna, but its almost to the top of the roof..
-
Hate to say it but that is not going to work worth a hoot. You need to get the load coil (plastic ball) above the roof line to make your setup work. Only problem is it is going to hit every bridge and over pass you come to.
What I would do would be to get a perch made for the front of the cab on the piller. -
i do have another option as well.... on the passanger side door i have the stupid pointless mirrior mounted on the top of the door, me and nother driver were thinking we could make some type of mount for the door and mout it their,
however, i hate...and i mean hate seeing trucks with wires haning down the side of the truck, so thats one issue i would have is where to put the coax cable..
now, rat, you say it wont work their, but i have heard many people say thats a good spot..read on forums and talked to cb shops and most suggest mounting it back their... tho i can understand why you say it wouldnt work, but how come more people have said put it back their, and your saying otherwise? -
You have very little antenna above the roof line and 90% or more of your antenna is blocked by the metal cab and cab wings. What is the swr with that setup?
Put your radio on Calibrate and key it up
Turn the SWR knob till the needle is on the Triangle on the far right of the meter
But the switch on SWR and channel 20 and key up the mic.
What does it say? I am willing to bet that the needle goes past the 3 on the meter.
