Hey guys, first post here, spent some time cruising around and reading but haven't found an answer to my question and it looks like there's some knowledgeable folks here. I appreciate any thoughts.

I have a mag mount Lil' Will. I'd like to have my cable 'permanently' - by this I mean under the rug, trim, etc. - wired in my vehicle but I want to remove the mag mount when parked (I live in the city). I was kind of surprised that the Lil' Will came with the coax permanently attached. I guess I'd just assumed there'd be some sort of fitting - isn't that the whole point of a mag mount? To make it removable? Anyway... I've asked around and gotten a couple different responses. First was to use 50 ohm TNC male and female connectors. Sounds great, but unbelievably I can't find such a thing anywhere locally or on the internet. There's plenty of TNC male, and TNC to something else (RF, BNC, whatever) adapters, but the thing I'm picturing is proving tought to find. The next guy told me 'never to splice coax' as it would effect performance, SWR, etc., but if I HAVE to do it use two PL259s and a coupler.

If anyone has anythoughts here I'd appreciate it. I'll probably just go with the 259s as they're in stock at radio shack. The connection will be inside the truck (not in the rain). Do you think splicing the coax will affect performance that much? I can't really think so, as long as the connections are all solid, but maybe I'm wrong. And if I'm wrong I obviously won't be able to return or sell the antenna.

The alternative would be to see if I can return the Lil' Will and get a Wilson 1000, or whichever one has a permanent mount and removable antenna. Kind of wish I'd though of that first but I like the low profile of the Lil' Will.

I only use the CB on longer trips and only to monitor traffic, etc., and for the entertainment (you guys are pretty entertaining, most of the time. Can you watch the language when my girl is riding shotgun though? Thanks.)

Let me know what you think, thanks.

I found tnc connectors on the Internet, but I had to include connectors in the search.

I prefer the fiberglass Wilson or Firestick antennas. I have successfully used Francis, too, but they get splintery on the outside after using them awhile.

get the wilson 1000 mag mount! you can remove the coil and whip for storage for the times you dont want an antenna.

I personally am against the lil wilson when it has to be removed.(which is why i no longer have it and got a k40 magnet) everytime i removed it, when i put it back i had to tune the antenna over and over. never got the same reading of 1.5 across as when i first tuned it. with the wilson 1000 magnet the magnet stays put keeping your swr the same when you re attatch the coil and whip.

Squirrel, what prevents someone from walking away with the magnet? I think the way to go is to have a hard mount through the roof with a removable antenna... I'll do that next time.

I did find TNC connections that I think will work, thanks 25 for encouraging me to go back and look again. I guess they don't do male to female but I'll use TNC the same way I was gonna use the 259s - two males and a coupling.

Squirrel, I just got an SWR meter, small one I'm gonna keep in the line. I thought tuning the Lil' Will meant cutting to length? There isn't much range for lengething/shortening in the housing. Did you have to keep cutting yours or just move the placement around?

    Thanks again.

THC and BNC are NOT the same !!!!! Why would a CB antenna come with a TNC ........ and why would you use one in place of a PL-259 ?

BNC are used on HT's all the time SO-239's on RADIOS HAS BEEN THE STANDARD SINCE ww2 which is why the PL259 is so common.

So WA4, you're saying go with the PL259s? I really have no idea what the difference is between them all. The TNC recommendation came from Wilson antennas, for whatever that's worth...

YES ...... PL-259 it is the CB standard.

PL259/SO239 is the standard on 99% on CB/HAM/VHF/UHF radios.

TNC ( threaded conectors ) and BNC ( snap on conectors ) are VERY good conectors and are widely used on Handheld radios and even scanners. HOWEVER when CB started in 1958 they were VERY COSTLY while the PL-259 because of its wide use in civilian and military radios even as far back as WW2 was much cheeper. Now there is one more widely used but costly connector called a type "N" and at 400 mhz or more it is a standard just like the so called UHF ( AKA PL-259 ) is on 2 meters ( 144 mhz ) and lower.

NOW if you run the PL-259 where it can get wet seal it up good its major drawback is a lack of good water seal LIKE the type "N", "TNC" and " BNC " but again unless you use some kind of adaptor NONE OF THEM are interchangable.

WA4, thanks again. Connections will be inside the vehicle. Assuming solid connections, do you think performance will be noticeably affected?

Thanks to everyone who responded here. Good forum.

EVEN my 223 mhz radios run SO239/PL259 connecters with NO PROBLEM !
At CB the losses are VERY SMALL .....
