I saw a guy who looked like he was in his 50s with only one leg climbing on his step deck at Iowa 80. Maybe he was in a hurry, but he was moving faster than most other open deck drivers that I've seen, both off and on the deck.

There are some great open deck securement videos on YouTube. Check out Choice Mas and Super Trucker Dan or just do a search for securement flatbed. There are also some companies that post training videos there. I started flatbed with little to no experience and with no training. I've been doing it now for 5 years and enjoy it. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
CV66GMG3 and Speed_Drums Thank this. -
Will do, and thanks for the video references. I have 109 days and a wakeup before I leave the machinist trade and take six weeks off before I start the program at the school. Need time to decompress and get my mind right for what I am about to do. My primary focus right now has been tuning up my body with exercise and stretching. I have my U.S. Navy seabag stuffed with old clothes and weight plates to simulate the weight of a lumber tarp. I use it to practice a proper lift. Already getting ahead of the game.Blue jeans, larry2903 and Kyle G. Thank this.

Can I guess you're a Veteran? I've only ever heard someone that's in the military or a Veteran refer to thing as so many days and a wake-up.
Anyway, great attitude. But, be careful of your expectations on yourself. When I started one of the things that got in my way was having too high of expectations on myself. Fortunately, one of our instructors took me to the side and tactfully told me to chill out because I was getting in my own way. There's alot to learn, alot to experience and skills that need to be developed and that takes time, practice and experience. You seem to have the right attitude and I have no doubts you'll get there. But, it does take time. Don't be too headstrong. Allow the things that take time, to take the time they need.
I was 59 when I started and decided against flatbed due to the risk to injury and my age. Doesn't mean it's not the right answer for you.
Pretty sure you'll get alot of support and encouragement around here. Folks here like to see attitudes and drive like you. Too many show up too clueless, with completely unrealistic expectations and too lazy to put the time, effort and energy needed to be successful at all this.
I'm rooting for you!!!!!!Blue jeans, CV66GMG3 and Numb Thank this. -
If you've been up on deck during a heavy storm--then you should defintely be right at home with flatbed....
