I run mine all the way forward. With a forward axle truck like a 379, you need the 5th wheel forward or you are missing out on extra weight you can haul. I believe first load I scaled with mine at 79k gross I was 10,400 on steers and that’s no good.

I ran with my 5th wheel fully back on almost every load with dry van, reefer, and hazmat tanker. The ride in my 2021 Freightliner and 2022 KW T-680 was better. I think I had to slide the 5th wheel on 2 or 3 loads where they wanted to max out the payload. I don't recall my steer weights ever being below 11,000 lbs. I just never noticed any traction problems from the steers "only" being 11-12K. I would only slide the 5th wheel if moving trailer tandems couldn't achieve legal axle weights.

I run mine slid forward on a single screw and maxing the drive at 20k means roughly 10,600 on the steer.

Watch the corners of the trailer too.

If everything clears at a 45 degree bend, you should be good then.

I'm grateful for all the help I've received both on this site and on this question, and this is one time it would be great to have a show and tell on the subject.

I very rarely have a load anywhere near the max. It's been years since I had to slide fifth wheel to get weights right.

Heh. Got into a disagreement with the guy that trained me on chemical tanking. He was a good guy, million safe miler.
But, he said you have to put the fifth wheel at this many slots back for a particular trailer.
We had identical Petes. But when I scaled in I noticed my steers were awful close to over, so I went back two slots on the fifth wheel.
Told him and we had a mild argument. Finally I parked my tractor next to his. Lo and behold our fifth wheel racks were NOT mounted the same.
