TTR has far reaching affects...

I've seen truck specific signage for decades.
That color of sign is just a warning and not regulatory

 

I've NEVER received a Ticket for making a W-I-D-E Right Turn regardless of "Trucks Use Right Lane" signage. USE ALL AVAILABLE ROOM!!

 

I picked my lane for turning right, and judging by the tire scrubs on the curb I made the correct choice.

 

I’m betting that the real reason for that sign was to keep the trucks in the far right lanes after the turn and not clogging the left lane for some reason. Somebodies’ complained enough and got it that way. We see that kinda stuff here and there in places were it makes no sense to anyone but city council and the karens who twisted their arms for the signs.

 

I'm using the fartherest lane from the curb for two reasons:

1) Generally, almost always, I can swing beyond my lane and make a wider turn. You can't do that from the curb lane, although sometimes there is extra room provided between the curb lane and the actual curb.

2) I can see the vehicle in the curb lane turning along side me in my mirrors and I'm turning away from the other side. The driver in the curb lane's mirror view of the adjacent vehicles are mostly blocked by the trailer but he has a good view of the curb area.

 

Every safety video I have ever watched says be in the outside lane. Until they finally update the videos from the 80’s, 90’s or early 2000’s, I’ll continue to do so.

 

You also can overthink these situations. If I have no experience with that turn and can't fully see ahead I am going to default to the signage. If I know this turn I will use my best wisdom. The one thing you as a driver want to avoid at all costs is a situation where the tractor is not fully in front of the trailer and you have a blind side. I have had some close calls with these types of turns. With most turns, you can't keep a Tractor-Trailer 100% inside the lane. Either you are going to make a wide turn outside the lane or the back tandem is going to leave the lane. I know it sounds elementary but the back tandem will NOT track 100% behind the tractor. It also will track differently based on the tandem setting. This is one of the most difficult things to get a green driver to understand. At least 4 times a month I hear from a safety person that they either fired or coached a driver that destroyed something with that back tandem.

 

When I had to renew my license that I lost (long story, don’t ask), I told the guy giving me the test that I would never drive my truck like the book says I have to.
He said that’s fine, just do it that way until you pass the test I’m giving you.

 

This is the correct interpretation.

 

It’s not a regulatory sign, it’s just a suggestion. If you’re going right onto Overland or south on 69 the right lane is fine, you’re going to be hating life if you’re in the right lane and then need to get over to go left on Overland.
