It's all about their insurance/workman's comp providers, and you'll find out that a lot of silly rules and procedures are coming down from insurance companies. The truck companies want their insurance rates to be as low as possible, so I think they pretty much let the insurance bean counters do whatever they want.

This sort of physical exam is becoming more common than you might think. The idea is to check your body mechanics (lift with the knees, not the back, that sort of thing), plus to make sure you can heft yourself in and out of the rig. I generally fly right through that exam, having once been required to lift some fairly large patients.

However, the weights usually don't exceed 35 lbs. Seems more like you're being tested on your ability to be a Certified Driver Lumper. This doesn't surprise me, given the direction the company was heading when I left it.

Having said that, you do need to be able to lift fairly significant weights (at least half your body weight), even if you aren't being expected to load/unload. While Marten does not require you to "chain up" in the winter (they discourage it last I knew), if you aren't in decent shape and have no choice but to chain up, you'll be in trouble. That's just one instance where being able to lift becomes important, and there are many more.

If lifting those weights just a few times left you sore, well, from a health care perspective, I recommend getting into a regular exercise routine. If you are way out of shape, I recommend having a chat with your family doctor first, to come up with something appropriate to your abilities and goals.

    sly1 Thanks this.

You aren't from too far away from me, how often do you get home? Is hometime important to you? And did I see on their website their tractors all have APU's?

    Thanks
