When I purchased my truck from Arrow Truck Sales I was allowed to buy a 1 month insurance policy to get the truck home. I was assured that I could use that same policy to get it to the truck shop for some minor repairs. That policy was very expensive around $250 if I remember correctly.

Most insurance companies wont offer you Bobtail insurance until you're hired on with a company or have your own authority. Keep that in mind if you plan on buying the truck, and then taking a while to actually hire on somewhere. If you're not an OOIDA member you might consider joining. If nothing else it will allow you to have a contact to "bounce" your questions off of them. Caveat Emptor, I am not suggesting you buy or not buy your insurance there. But, its a place to start asking questions...

Something else to consider. Theres alot more to it than just Bobtail insurance. They have the insurance so convoluted these days its hard to figure out just exactly what you need.

Tell me the difference between the two of those???

Personally I pay about $300 a month for everything. I think the tractor insurance is about $60 a month, and another $60 a month for trailer insurance. The rest of it is Cargo insurance I believe...

What most people call bobtail is actulay unladen liabilty, which you can only get while leased to a motor carrier. You will also have to start you comp ins when you buy the truck.

Insurance sales people may not be properly informed or are about as honest as recruiters but I was told if I was bobtailing under dispatch to get a load my carrier wouldn't cover that under NTL and the carrier's insurance would try to say it was NTL and they weren't liable .

they won't write a bobtail policy unless you have the truck running under an ICC/MC number. if you want to drive the truck home and don't have it leased on to a company or have your own authority then you need a temporary insurance policy for it for like 30 days or whatever they write and they are usually like $200

I thank all of you very kindly and sincerely. I have a much firmer ground to stand on. A fellow from progressive was talking about 500 mile radius, I told him I have been rollin 48, I just want to get a rig home and it might be from Utah, and then he wants to complicate things. You fellas seem to understand things. I have Geico on my home and automobiles, but they don't do rigs here.

The thing to do is find a good commercial insurance agent in your area.
For companies like Canal you will need an agent - underwriter.

Well, since you're shopping around, try COOL out of Billings,Mt. (Continental Owner operators Ltd.) I had them in '07-'08 and paid pretty fair rates.
