Hello boys I'm one of those good ole company dudes that's thinking about getting in the game with the big boys. I'm currently at Estes and make 100K+ easily without really working winters. I planned one paying one more car off then jumping out there.

The car should be paid off in 2 years so the only major bill will be mortgage. No kids, not married, IDGAF about running the road (I did that at marten transport for 19 months mostly) and have excellent credit. (Literally spotless)

I plan on running a reefer given the fact I like the downtime sometimes and know a bunch of the lanes still from working at marten. What are you guys thoughts? Eventho I have a great career at Estes (been here 5 years Oct. 3), I still try to study and learn about other companies etc. Any advice appreciated.

If you have a good amount of money saved up, then that’s one good thing..if you plan on buying a used truck to start out with, i would wait till the prices fall which they will soon because the market should bottom out and you should be able to get a decent used truck for cheap..as long you are smart with your finances and such, you should be able to do well…

If you love traveling, no wife and kids even with lower rates a single guy or girl
Willing to go anywhere can and follow the freight can make money. Buy a nice old truck and go trucking

So soon means 2 years from now? I’d sell the car, your not going to need it anyway.

Definitely not soon. Go look at places like freight waves and see what they're saying about the freight market. Hell, just look on here.

You will make comparable money with more headache and stress. You could also make considerable less depending on down time, breakdown cost, etc. You will have more freedom as far as your schedule so if that's important to you I would look into it but I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze right now. Being able to be a road warrior is a big advantage, you can stay in the good freight market so that will be in your favor. Then again that will negate the freedom part. If you miss "the road" just go work for a good company.

Overall unless you just hate working for ESTES I would stay put. I assume you probably have a nice nest egg by now, I wouldn't piss it away on the trucking industry black hole.

If I could make 100k without working winters I'd sell my truck yesterday

Good your starting plans. Once you have all your equipment sorted and in tip top shape plan on about 50 k in bank if leasing on and about 80-100k in bank if going as your own. You will need the extra capital. Reefer is doing ok out here. Rates are a little higher than D A T advertise. They get their info from guys using factoring and many of those guys haul for cheap.

You say you have a mortgage, can you park your truck and trailer there? Does it have a barn or building big enough to get it in?

Overall now is a terrible time to start, but if you can make it now, you can make it anytime

Once you get the Vette, you keep the Vette lol.

My apologies guys I didn't mean soon as I'm tomorrow but to me 2 years isn't ALOT of time. I hope I didn't cause any confusion.

I would suggest an investment property. This way you can have income in 5-10 years that equal to a low paying job if not more.

With recent FMCSA rules on elogs and paper logs being discussed, it’s going to be harder and harder to be an owner operator.
