Yes, magic I have covered, I don't really use the jakes much as is and I only have 2 stages already. Disc brakes are a wonderful thing really. Fast spool up times from what I understand can be achieved using a wastegated turbo which has a smaller turbine housing to reduce spool up and the wastegate prevents over spooling.

At this point there isn't much else on the engine than an e model cat.

I'm not looking for more power, I'm happy with the factory 500 I have but I have a failing turbo and a standard one is miles cheaper than the vgt. Even with the magic in the computer.

As long as I can turn the same 30ish psi I should be at the same power and not be messing with turning it up. I don't have any intention of turning it up, just happens that when it rains it pours and the vgt actuator is failing or something internal to the turbo is failing.

It's been data logged and all that and there's times when it stumbles and according to the log the ecm ask for x amount of vgt movement and the vgt never gives it so truck cuts fuel until it does move and then it'll take off again. Diag was a failing turbo.

So from what I've been able to gather as stated a wastegated turbo can spool up faster due to a smaller turbine and housing, the wastegate dumps excess exhaust when it reaches desired boost pressure in order to prevent over spooling the turbo vs a non wastegated version which can be laggy down low, the ecm will add as much fuel as it needs for how much boost it sees either way but to make it not feel laggy I assume I should go wastegated.

Ah, the details that put more context into why you asked the question. Now it makes more sense.

The little things that should go up front to avoid any confusion as to the method behind the madness.

Changing from a VGT system to a waste gate controlled system is going to get complicated. Lots of parts to change and lots of programs to adjust/change/modify. The cost may not be worth the limited benefits.

A replacement vgt is in the 5500 dollar range.... swap will be roughly half that.

Not sure, that seems a bit high for a replacement turbo. If memory serves me, it’s a holset unit. Haven’t had a paccar engine in a while, thought factory refurbished units went for under 2 k complete. Then that was almost 10 years ago.

Grouch of the day— went to a nationwide sporting goods store to buy a couple boxes of what used to be the most popular caliber rifle bullet in the lower 48 —.270– cause we got 4 elk to get, the kids are the shooters and I only have 3 boxes left which will probably not be enough if they get excited— didn’t see any on the shelf so I asked and bless the little nose ring wearing full sleeved tattoo cross gender It’s heart, it had never heard of a .270 — this how I know that the country is F’d — Outlaw Huck’s had them though
