I was recently hired with RE West, and so far, so good, everyone there has been great to work with and I've spent the last 2 weeks training on their yard and skipped the new ELDT training since I had already had my class A from before, just with restrictions. I took the pre-trip / backing / road test yesterday with the company's own 3rd party examiner and I passed with flying colors. I immediately took my paperwork down to the DMV and I ended up adding tanker and doubles/triples to it as well. They issued an updated CDL class A with no restrictions and sent me on my way. What is bothering me is that I had to sign a form that stated that since I had been tested by a third party, the state may cancel my license and require me to retest at my own expense at a TN Dept. of Safety run site (DMV). Is this something that happens on a regular basis? Does anyone think this could happen down the road? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

my "best guess", is that there, 3rd party testing is allowed under some unique rules by the DMV. sorta like a probationary CDL..??

    so yeah, maybe so....

but i suspect too, that you have to really screw up, or the state finds fraud from that 3rd party testing company.

i think something like that happened in TN with Swift many years ago..????

Yeah, I've heard of it happening when the examiners were fraudulently passing people, but that is certainly not the case here. Most people from outside companies that test there fail miserably, the other day I saw someone (from another company) almost jackknife the truck trying to do their alley dock, needless to say they didn't pass. West has a very good training program and excellent trainers and they fully prepare you to pass on your first go. The training is only 3 weeks if your starting brand new with no CDL at all, and they do an awesome job getting you ready.

What my main worry is; what if the feds or the state of TN suddenly decide down the road that everyone who tested 3rd party no longer has a valid CDL?

Find out if it's ever happened to anyone before. If it has, try to find out why they were invalidated.
If not, quit worrying. Go drive.

From what I've been able to scoop up, the only times it has happened, was when fraud was uncovered from the examiners themselves or they had their testing certification revoked. But yeah, it's not a probationary CDL like Budd was saying, it's the real deal just like if you tested at the DMV, only difference is the knife that hangs over your head if you did it 3rd party. I guess I worry too much, probably nothing will ever come of it but who knows. I was just wondering if anyone on here had ever heard of anything happening to people who took the test 3rd party.

the only time you'll have to worry, is when you are like 4,000 miles from home, you get pulled into a scale house, and they check your CDL, find it's been revoked, and your new digs is a jail cell with Bubba...

other than that...just go and drive.

There have been instances where a 3 rd party tester was found to “ not be in compliance” “ not following all the rules and regulation they need to adhere to” this results in any driver that was licensed by that tester during the timeframe the state decides upon needs to be retested. It happend in northern PA not too long ago, my understanding is the drivers who were incorrectly licensed were able to continue driving but had to come back to PA within a certain timeframe and be retested.
If your third party testing facility is doing thier job correctly you will most likely never have an issue.
I believe I heard something about doing paperwork ahead of time in the case in PA.

Then you go take a test, keep driving and don’t worry about it!
