Most companies want the lumpers to do it unless 100% necessary.....obvious exclusions are tankers and flatbed, but for freight most companies payfor and want you to use lumpers.....

Lumpers will 90% of the time do the job 2 to 3 times faster than you could, and that gets you back to doing what they pay you for.....DRIVING...

My company will pay upwards of $400 on some loads for lumpers, but if it was a planned driver unload, such as a nursery load, will only pay drivers $125-200 to unload it....when they will pay a lumper service $250+++ for a straight pulloff....it is stupid, further, other loads only pay $16hr and it has to be logged as on-duty not driving to get paid....

Q: do they *pay for*, or *reimburse you for* lumpers?

I thought the question was more towards "can truckers unload themselves, then say "yeah, I had lumpers' do it, for $400, Gimme the money?"

Im just wondering if truckers do this for extra dough.Im getting the impression that they only unload when they have to.It does sound like a nice chunk of extra change if it were possible. And maybe some good exersise too.

thats sounds good but what if you were up all night driving to get the load there on time, becouse the shipper took there time loading you,the exercise sounds good but then you are not rested so that you can sit at another shipper all day long, so you can run all night to get that one there ontime.:smt025 :compress:

I used to lump a lot of my frozen loads for the $120 extra cash I'd make. It eventually cost me 3 herniated discs and a 5 years out of the cab for rehab! You only have 1 back, it's up to you....

    FWIW,

the point to be made here is : lumpers will get paid MORE than the company will pay YOU to do it.

Well, that depends on the company. Some have a max limit of say $100 for lumper fees while others will pay whatever the actual cost is. My example of $120 is the the figure set by the lumpers for a certain drop I did so that is what I too would charge my company.....

Apparently "some" outfits expect the driver to pay any shortage if the rate is higher than their "policy" allows...
