Texas is trash for open deck unless you’re in with an agent.
I live in Winchester va and I do very well with an RGN, as I did with a step.
If I remember correctly, flat/step rent is 286 a week, but you get 73% instead of 65.
You can also not rent a trailer and take the 65% with flat/step.
The good loads never see the board.
Deal with direct shippers as much as you can and be on time all the time.

Should I put a truck on with landstar and hire a driver? What do you think, is it possible for me to generate a passive income with 1 truck, 1 driver in the beginning, just my thoughtsAnother Canadian driver Thanks this.

They let you get your own shipper or the ones in their book already?Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

I'd give you 1 in 10,000 chance of success. They won't allow a truck to come on without a driver.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

You have to use the Landstar agentsAnother Canadian driver and Stringb8n Thank this.

that BCO's keep 74% apply if you have your own dry van or reefer?Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Think it's 72 for van. Don't think I'd come to Landstarve with a reefer.Another Canadian driver, Aamcotrans, BennysPennys and 1 other person Thank this.

what about expedited (Hazmat)Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

I do a lot of hazmat. Hazmat for reefer I can't give you a true informed opinion. But there is perhaps 1 reefer load for every 200 van loads here. When I have looked around for reefer loads, the rates aren't that much more than for van. When you consider the hassle involved, not worth it to me.
I have bumped into maybe 3 guys in 6 years with reefers. All say how well they are doing. The country is a big place, but I don't see them anymore.
You'll hear a lot of talk about relationships. Ok. Great. Wonderful. Oh the agent lost that customer. Oh, not so great. Oh, not so wonderful.Another Canadian driver, HoundDog7, Speed_Drums and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ran with LS a couple of years back:
The truck got paid the 65% of line haul and accessory (fuel surcharge, unload, detention, and stuff like that) pays at 100%.
There is a separate line on the settlement if you own the trailer. It's been a while but I think dry van is around 3% of line haul. Reefer is a higher percentage.
There is a trade off with running a reefer for general freight, it weighs more, you may not be able to haul the heavier loads. It does open you up for "Keep from freezing" loads in the winter. When I was running with LS (a couple of years back) very few reefer loads hit the board so I stayed with dry van. Folks I talked to that had reefers said the very rarely ran loads that needed them. They were in it for the higher percentage.
A recruiter should be able to clarify the percentage pay numbers.Another Canadian driver, Speed_Drums and Loudstacks Thank this.
