The dot number is NOT your authority. It is a register number for the dept. of trans. Most states are now requiring you to have your own dot number. It's no big deal. Just apply and they will give you one. It is FREE. Never get plates from the company you are leased to. If something happens and you part ways, you have no plate if you get them from the company.

joshk, cetanediesel and otherhalftw Thank this.

Checked on this and you are right. I got my authority several years ago and it was not an option then.

I bought my own tractor and trailer, bought Tennessee base plates and kept them stashed. I ran under the co baseplate and DOT MC#. I could then put the paltes on my truck if something happened and I ahd to get home, because I was leased to Goodway in York Pa and they went bankrupt 30 days after I left the co. You never know and TN plates are cheap.

went today and found out what they ment. You have to have what they call registrant dot number that is your personal dot number and a company dot number . They told me its a new law that went in to effect jan 1 2010. It was nothing to get took like ten minutes on the internet.

You need a "Registrant" US DOT number. You may apply on-line at www.safersys.org.

The PRISM system requires license plates be associated with a US DOT number. There's no cost for the US DOT number.

    Be safe.
