This same thing happened the day I was to take my skills test. There was a woman that needed to add air-brakes for a school bus. She had to retake the entire skills test, backing, driving, all. The guy that accompanied her to the DMV, told me that they have had others add the air-brakes and did not have to retake it all. So I guess it depends on not only where/what state, but the individual examiner.

What ?? If he doesn't have to do a pretrip or driving test just what is "the air brake skill test in a truck "? Why not have to do a pretrip when a truck with air brakes has many components that weren't in the truck he did his first pretrip on ? And has been mentioned many times here there is no air brake endorsement . The back of his CDL shows no endorsements now and will show none when he gets the air brake restriction removed .

If I already have my air breaks for a class B but want to upgrade to an A do I need to retake my air break part l?
-
Class A is for combination vehicles, so I believe you will have to do all 3 parts of the test again (Pre-trip, Skills, and Driving). You also have to attend a CDL school now even for an upgrade because of the new rules. Some states/DMV locations may let you get away with it though.Last edited: Nov 5, 2022
