Best thing you can do for regens is ultra low ash engine oil.

 

Agreed all new Volvos only want you to run a certain oil for this reason and better fuel MPG. Curious do you think oil additives are snake oil as well?

 

Additives they sell on the shelf at the store to add to your oil to "enhance it"?

If you want the best, run 5-40 synthetic low ash, if you have a dpf.

If an oil needs an additive, it's already in it.

Everything I have seen says the same things. Synthetic oils are awesome.
Additives so nothing aside from change the viscosity of the engine oil. You can run gear oil if you want thicker oil.

Additives in fuel is just completely stupid.
If you want more mpg run number 4 diesel LOL

 

So if running oil for long periods of time they do not need to have anything added back to them? Always thought you needed to have it tested to confirm a few things. Especially if the base needs to be added.

 

Get it tested, every engine is different. I know a paccar mx13 without a dpf or egr and it goes over a year between oil changes, and the oil looks new at the one year mark.

I have no clue as I didn’t go to college for additives but I do think so much has been stripped from fuel in particular that putting in an additive for a lubricant may not be too far fetched

As far as mpg I think you’re right
Fuel changes throughout the year and from one station to the next even if it’s the same fuel not all fuel stops care for their tanks is the same and then there is the climate and geographic area

You would have to run the exact same load for a few years to get a noticeable average

My dad is long gone but he would have enjoyed any fuel and oil conversation
He was old school and did some weird stuff but was always able to get the outcome he wanted
