car hauling question straps thru wheels vs chains

    update: think i got it all figured out.

    i am hauling a 2016 toyota 4runner, all decked out and expensive. this thing is proving to be more difficult to secure than i would have thought. it has a fancy aftermarket suspension on it so i don't want to squish down the suspension by hooking to the above suspension area. i actually can use axle straps on rear axle, but not on the front because there is no front axle. so it looks like i need to run my axle straps through the wheels,, my trailer attachement points are mostly on the side of the trailer in assorted spots, so the pulling load will be sort of mildly pulling the front tires into a "toe-out" manner. same on rear tires but not as worried about those.

    What trailer do you have? Are u hauling just 1 vehicle like this ? Can make a "tire lasso" out of a ratchet strap... it secures so it is pulling both front and back

    i can do that on the front but not the rear,, and will probably be my plan b if i can't find anything really fancy locally. i assume it is not really a "lasso" but more of an x? i mean, it doesn't tighten on itself like a girth type hitch or lasso, right? but i can make axle straps work on the rear so no problem.

    What's the big deal about squishing the suspension? If it was going to damage it, it'd have damaged the stock suspension too. I don't haul cars but I've had to haul a few of my own vehicles and never had a problem. Unless there's something I'm missing?

    Yes it's just an x... it tightens on the tire directly and you get pulling force in both directions so u don't have to tighten the snot out of it... on the rear you can take a strap and feed it thru your strap hook to make a sling to wrap around axle and hook ratchet to back end of trailer if possible...

    If u can take some pics of ur trailer and securement points and we can give u some better ideas for securement

    well, i think the overall school of thought is that as you drive, the suspension will move up and down, and loosen

    “Squishing the suspension” can cause frame flex as you drive down the road. That could damage paneling and break windows. Think 4wd vehicles on the trails should have there windows down.

    Vehicles are meant to drive down the road with their suspension flexing. Why strap the frame down.

    Secure the tires or axles and let the vehicle ride it’s suspension.
