When I had my run-in the Eagle, I informed the nice ladies at the POE in Alpine, Wyo. an hour later. The woman said it was a good thing I didn't hit it, I said why?, she because even if it wasn't my fault, she would still have to arrest me until it could be investigated as a federal offense.

With a 6 to 8 foot wingspan, I'd want to avoid California condors too.

Oh the messy deer stories. Deer are just plain annoying. I used to hit about a dozen a year but since i am driving less i only hit about 6 last year. Yeah swerving is bad but slowing down a little is safe sometimes. On occasion one will get under the truck and knock an air line off. I stop if i can to check for broken air lines after i hit them and try to drag them off the road. Sometimes they are still alive. I wished we were allowed to carry a firearm to put them out of their misery sometimes. I wouldnt dare try to cut the throat of a buck if I only broke his back.

Elk still make me real nervous. I know im due to hit one soon.

Who are the guys saying they have deer charge them??? I really have a hard time believeing that. Seriously. Cmooonn.

You can carry, but that's in the other thread.

Most states won't let you shoot it anyway. I know Ohio don't, I ask the other night. They just sent a trooper to do it.

I carry a good wooden bat and have swiftly dispatched
several wounded roadside critters over the years

The deer are herding up now, because of snow and the rut being over. You usually see a bunch. I hit 1 with a Columbia, took out the radiator and fan shroud and bent the center section of the bumper back. It was a solid hit, and the truck had to be towed. I have hit several, usually after slowing down.

That usually does less damage to the truck and the deer get up and run away after.

That collision was probably between 40 to 50 at just before 3 AM. there was a storm coming and the weather was changing on a 275 mile return, those were the first deer I had seen that night and I was almost back.

I bought a bought a couple of deer whistles and I installed them backwards by accident, and I had a whole herd of deer chaseing my truck down I-80.

I realize this is a third hand account, but it is believable. Another driver and I were swapping "road kill stories" when he came up with the all-time topper. He saw another driver from our company that was having the front end replaced. The grill was gone and the headlights were just hanging. He asked the other driver what happened and this was the story. It seems he was driving in Maine when he came up on a bull moose just standing in the middle of the road. He came to a stop and the moose just continued to stand there. That's when the driver decided to use his air horn to get the moose to move. It worked, just not the way he wanted. The moose took the horn as a challenge and so it charged the truck. It walked away into the woods and the truck had to be towed.

This oughta be a no-brainer but I think I've read somewhere in one of these threads that whistles should be mounted in a certain way/place. I know I'm leaving myself wide-open for some "swift" abuse here, but, somewhere along the way, would someone give me a straight answer?:biggrin_2559:

    Thanks,
    Oldnew...
