Could be a bad injector, or bad connector to the injector. If the ECM is sensing any opens in the circuits the power is derated and RPM limited to 1400-1600. The only thing is the Check Engine Light should be on. Definitely see if there are codes before throwing parts at it.

Hey, 8AxleCowTruckin, did you come up with anything on the ecm. We were 0 to -15 degrees here today, so i did something else besides trucking.

It doesnt seem to be the ecm so far. We believe it may just be the fuel pump. I called Mo's in Belgrade to see if he would rebuild it. He is very highly recommended. I hope that fixes the problem. I will keep you updated. Yeah that was plenty cold.

Scratch that. I was told to get a new ECM for the ole truck. Now I just need to decide where to get one. Any recommendations from anyone? Is one of those reconditioned ECM off of ebay the thing to get? Or should I get a performance one? I really like to get good fuel mileage.

Ok. I think i am in the chips now. I installed a loaner ecm from a 430-500. Mine is a 460-525. Anyway, the loaner worked. I am having Vaugn Salvage of Havre send my ecm in for a rebuild. I don't know where he is sending it, and i think it will be $800 or so. He was helpful with the sensor swaps, so i did not ask price. A cummins ecm is 1,700 to 1,900. Be careful of used ecms I was told by Cummins Rocky Mountain in Missoula. They can reflash an ecm but some are shot, and that is why they are for sale. The guy told me that he tried to reflash 5 ecms from one wrecking yard before one was good. Any one that you get will need to be reflashed, $250 to $500 depending on where. There are multiple codes in the ecm, including low idle, idle increase increments, pto idle speed, tire size, axle ratio(to determine speedometer accuracy) anyway you get my drift. There are several pages of options that need to be right in order for a replacement ecm to work properly. He thought the turn around time would be a week or so. I can live with that.

It may pay you to bypass the ecm cooling plate which is directly behind the ecm-ecm is actually mounted to it. There should be a non-return valve in one of the fittings (cab side) but may not be fitted, cooling plate gets clogged with rubber debrie and other rubbish. If you find that this is your problem then you'll have to replace it as you will never get it cleaned out completly.:Wrench:

Thanks to all for the input. We have gotten the ecm back from the rebuild shop, reinstalled it and all is well. The truck runs good.

We are back in operation now too. As it turns out....it was not the ECM after all. But the pigtail that plugs into the ECM had a bad wire or two. The mechanic fixed the damaged wires and now the truck is running smooth as ever and it has the power it used to have again.

However....there is still a small flutter anywhere from 1200-1400rpms when the throttle is barely past a neutral position. But its running good and thats all we care about at the moment. Details will have to be fixed when we have more time this summer.
