Ive got a 3405E (5EK) that I inframed myself last december. Everything was redone with IPD parts and Im currently running in the 800HP range. Everything was great till about 3 months ago, it started using oil. A month later I blew the head gasket between #2 n 3. I realized then that the oil gallery grommets were not in the spacer plate, so I figured that was the issue. I put er all back together and now its still using about a gallon of oil every 500 miles (not a misprint). No leaks anywhere. Today I took the exhaust manifold off to see if there was a wet hole and #2 is definitely wet and #6 is showing signs, but not actually wet. What is the next step in diagnosing this?? PS - the block was not decked nor the head touched other then new injectors and cam at the time of inframe. Could this likely be valve guides leaking?

If it’s valve guides you will have smoke after idling and smell burnt oil when you pull out after idling. You will also see a lot of carbon on the springs with bad guides. It’s from the cylinder pressure bypassing the guides and cooking the oil on that spring.

My money is on a broke ring

OK, so I guess the next step is to pull the head and then pop those 2 out and see whats what? I guess I might as well send the head in to have it resealed also?

How old is the air compressor, it could be using the oil.

Would a broken ring leave marks in the liner or not necessarily?

If you are gonna pull it apart I'd definitely get the head checked out and check liner protrusion

I replaced the compressor when I did the head gasket about 2 months ago since I thought that could be my oil consumption issue, and it was leaking some out the head anyways. Im gonna pull the pan and head tomorrow and if theres enough daylight, get the #2 n 6 pistons pulled to see whats up with the rings and liner walls

    Mnmover99 Thanks this.

99 percent of the time it will leave a double ring groove at the top. It should also have a heart beat when you look at blow by coming out of fill tube. Sometimes you can feel it putting your hand over fill tube but not always
