Using Google maps vs. Dedicated GPS unit:

I’ve been using Google Maps as my primary GPS ever since they upgraded it in 2012. I never just enter an address and roll, I always verify that my routing is truck safe, and I’ll adjust the route if needed. I have both Hammer and a recent Rand McNally atlas for backup.

I won’t claim that it’s never steered me wrong (but I can’t claim that for ANY GPS that I’ve used), but after over a million miles of using it, I’m pretty happy with it.

 

I just use the good old Rand McNally commercial road atlas.
I do use the phone for the google satellite view to see exactly where the tanks or the FBO is located at the airport. Or if I’m hauling chemicals I use it to see where the truck entrances are. The only GPS I own is on my boat.

 

I started with sprint GPS. Being a western regional driver. It did good.

Then I got enough points to buy rand. A week later I traded it for PC miler. Never had a problem with that one. Input address and go.

Rand was just flat out beyond ridiculous.

Then California came along. And I had to run google alongside. PC could get me to the area but struggled to get me to the door.

 

Pretty handy if you are overwidth .
