First time driving an autoshift in 49 years of trucking. Gotten used to how to work with it. What I cannot figure out is how it has 14 gears. 1-13 plus a low. I've never encountered such a thing. How would you get 14 gears if it was manual? Maybe a 13 plus an air selected low range? This is a new one on me.

You don't usually count reverse. EG 18 speed=18 fwd gears, 13 speed = 13 fwd and so on. This thing has 14 fwd. Just thought I'd see if anybody was familiar with this trans.

I’m not familiar with it but years ago spicer had a 14 speed. They also had a 20 speed. A 7 speed main with an air shift hi-lo would give you 14 speeds

This one has L, plus 1-5, then it does a range shift goes to 6, and sounds like it splits the top end, like a 13.

Really a 13 speed is a 14 speed. Low in the high range is redundant of 4th in the lo range, so we don't use it. But if you did, you could split it giving you 14.

Yes, I used to use that gear sometimes going around a corner, saved going into low range. Just had a bigger rpm split than going down to low range. Anyway, regarding this 14 speed transmission, I've given up finding info on it. The truck was built in Mexico but can't find a model # of the trans. But it's definitely got 13 speeds, plus a low gear. I'm just going to drive it and not analyze it further. I will say, the autoshift is nice in the city but I sure wouldn't want to take it off road, back into the bush and icy hills. Even an old Mack with a 6 speed would be better there. Thanks to all who replied. I'm done on this one.

Perhaps this is not a popular thing to say. I like shifting. When do you need to shift? It isn't going down the road at highway speeds, rather in city traffic. I simply would hate an automatic in traffic!
