Why did we stop using a single giant battery, and now use 3 tiny batteries?

    Just thinking about this, and having to clean 6 terminals, and deal with extra wires. What happened to everyone using a 4d or a pair of 4d?

    Why?

    Reserve capacity.

    The newer trucks (from 1995 on) needed more running reserve capacity for the electronics on board.

    The older two and three battery trucks needed more starting reserve capacity and with the older (read crappy) battery technology, they needed more starting reserve capacity.

    Group 24 is 140 min x 3 (in my truck)
    8D is 440 min

    So if 4 vs 1 that would give you more but if 3v1 it's about the same?

    I'm running 4 batteries. I didn't know you could just get one big one. That would be more convenient.

    It really varies depending on what brand and type of batteries you are running. With the price of fuel , better batteries pay for themselves quickly.
