Calculations given were top of head set to show how dealer principals view salesman. It was his cute way of "you guys want more money, work harder, make more calls." My raise the commission is the salesman's way to push for a raise.
At the end of a year, you can run your calls (call reports-4 a day) into your gross pay (W2), divide by 10 (1 in 10 calls) to see how much a winning call was worth. I had a territory from TN line on north side, to US82 highway on south side, bounded by I55 on West side, and AL line on East side. Lived in Tupelo . Usually made 4 valid for effect sales calls day. Hit some others for associated allied products: dock boards, pallet trucks, hand trucks, etc...

In the 50's, I hauled grain/seed in 100 burlap bags, floor/hand loaded and unloaded. Dried fruit out of CA to Jax MS or Bham AL. Boxed in cardboard say 12' wide. 8" high and 24" long. Dried beans in 100 lb bags. Floor/hand loaded and unloaded.
Usual routine then was 5 men and 2 or 3 Jakes wooden hand truck's. Hand in warehouse stacked 5 bags of seed/grain on a hand truck (was pulling from an organized stack) and pushed it out into the trailer. 2 hands ,1 each side grabbed and tossed off and in to trailer pile, hand left with his empty hand truck to warehouse. Meanwhile another was on the way. So 3 loading/moving, and 2 unloading-placing it went pretty fast. China Doll in Mobile opened at 7, we were leaving by 9 all routine.
You can see how pallets and a forklift decreased the people and improved om the actual integrity of the product being handled..

Tell you what - in that you had to hand unload on to a hand truck, you became the poster child of "How and Why" a wherehouse operator could save thousands a year and make the forklift virtually free when they purchased a forklift from you.

    A variation on sales:
Man bought a salvage rail car of toothbrushes, cheap. Put help wanted sign in window of office. Secretary came back and told him an applicant was there.
Further said he seems a little dense and stutters, might not be worth seeing. Man said send him in we will see.
Deal was, briefcase full of toothbrushes, 100 count. Hit the street and sell, come back with $100.00, we split 50/50, you get more , repeat.
So the guy leaves, in hour and a half he is back, briefcase empty, had the money, needed more product, had to get back out there...
So this goes on and all are sold and the stutterer stays on doing real well with various other products, but man always remembers this.

There come a state wide sale convention, man decides to send his man. Knows he is good, gonna show off a little on the toothbrush caper.
Comes the presentation, has to do a sales demo. So the stutterer gets up, says it simply to sell toothbrushes. Another leading salesman ask how.
Stutterer says it simple, all you need is some chips and some dip. Leading salesman asks him to repeat, not clear on this method. Stutterer is a
little hot about being questioned, so he expounds...
You go to a corner, you set up a card table with some dip and some chips. Man/woman comes around corner, You say "Hi, ya want a little dip.
Most will say, "Why yes, I will". They take a scoop of dip on a chip and try it. They spit, make a face and say: "This tastes like ####".
You say "It is, ya wanna buy a toothbrush?"

Just the way it was then. Shows Skillet there will always be opportunity in material handling, as no one like to work any more. And forklifts break.
Techs mantra: They do not get well by themselves".

Once apon a time, back in the early 2000s my bride (who is an attorney) represented a forklift mechanic who happened to become the number one dead-beat dad for child support in the State of Texas. He made good money, but he actually inherited a very large inheritance from someone who he only knew as the person whom he inherited the money from as Aunt Meme. My bride spent a lot of time and money and found the person who he knew as Aunt Meme. She negotiated a settlement to cover the past due child support and he was relived of the past due amount. I bought the 8 forklifts he has owned as the fee to represent him, and it was a very good year.

Depends on your labor supply and cost...
That Beneke MACK in the avatar is leaving Soledad Prison in Soledad. CA with 32K of dried beans, bound for China Doll in Mobile AL.
They will be worked up and dived into bags and sold. You may have seem them in your stores...
