In order to get top quality drivers the pay scale needs to be .10 cpm higher.
Of course in the current economy drivers are a dime a dozen and carriers have lowered their pay scales as well as increased the hiring criteria.

I arrived back at the home terminal on 01,29.10 and was planning on going out in 2-3 days. However, had a 7 yr old GD admitted to the hospital and ended up being off until 02.05.10
02.06.10: Received a ld assignment from Cottage Grove, MN to 1) Rochester, NY 2) Schenectady, NY and 3) Woonsocket, RI. MT=21 LD=1385. Made it to the shipper, a nice D&H, was out in 30". Made it to Elkhart, IN with no problems.
02.07.10: Stopped for fuel in Austinberg, OH. Made it to Corfu, NY, a service area about 30 miles from 1st stop.
02.08.10: Made it to the first stop in Rochester, NY. Snowing lightly with the roads in good condition. In and out in 60". Called stop #2 to try and deliver and they said no. So drove down to Schenectady to the new Pilot and sat there until the morning.
02.09.10: Made to the second stop with no problems. Very large industrial park with alot of traffic. Had to blindside back in across two lanes of traffic to a slanted dock. No problems. Out in 90". Drove over to third stop in RI. While enroute received my next load assignment. Pickup in Providence, RI to Statesboro, GA. MT=17 LD=1009. Made it to the customer with no problems. Very nice people in RI. Another blindside back into a door with no dock!!!! In and out in 60",
Off to the next pickup. This facility must be in the oldest part of Providence!!!! Old cobblestone very narrow streets, cars parked alongside the curbs on both sides!!! Had to straddle the center line to avoid taking off a couple hundred mirrors!!! A real white-knuckle drive and during rush hour to boot!!!! And, to top it off, I took a wrong turn and had to backtrack through some of the congested residential streets I have ever seen!!! Finally made it to the shipper and yes, U guessed it, another blind side back!!!! LOL Was out in two hours. Took them 2 hrs to load 13 pallets!!! Got out of there, which was an adventure, and made it to I95 in Easthaven, CT. The radio says a major winter snow storm is on the way!!!
02.10.10: Woke up and it is snowing very heavy with gusty winds. I only have 3465 lbs in my trl from the pickup in Providence. I get out on I95 and roads are in pretty good shape with traffic moving at about 40mph. I'm sticking in the far right lane while the plows are in the far left lanes. I drive about 30 miles and the snow is coming down harder , road conditions are getting worse, and the wind is coming up!!! Oh how I wish I had 45K in the box!!! The wind is starting to blow me over on the shoulder and am feeling the steers sliding!!!! I make it to the next service area(Safe Haven) and shut it down for the day. Radio says the National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for the area I'm in. Will sit until the AM or until it is safe to travel. Dispatch informed and delivery appt rescheduled.
So I had a delicious "Mac & Dons" salad and Big Mac and am watching "Criminal Minds". Looking forward to the AM!!! LOL

Greetings!!!
Hope everyone is doing okay.
It has been an eventful stretch of days for me. Since leaving the home terminal on 02.06.10, I have driven in snow everyday!!! Now, I personally don't mind driving in snow, just go slow, maintain a prolonged or exaggerated distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, and really slow down for exits, ramps, and curves!!!! It just wears on you over an extended period of time!!! I didn't experience any adverse events and made all appts on time(except 1).
02.11.10: After sitting for the past twenty-four hours during one of the blizzards in the NE I am on my way. The Governor lifted the State of Emergency and I-95 is open. I leave at 0600hrs and 95 is in very good shape!!! There is very light snow falling. Traffic is light and the salt has done a terrific job!!! The wind has died down and the GW's top deck is open with no restrictions!!! WHEEE!!! This is good news because I am so light in the box. Sailed thru NJ,DE,MD, and VA. All roads are in very good condition!!! Stopped for fuel in Pleasant Hill, NC. Drove down to Latta, SC and shut down for the night . Had a hot shower and an Arby's special.
02.12.10: Drove down to cosignee in Statesboro, GA. Even though I was 25 hrs late for my appt they were very nice and understanding. Was immediately assigned a door was backed in less than 30" after my arrival. While being unloaded. received my next ld assignment. PU a pre-loaded trl in Chester, SC up to Michigan City, IN. MT=188 LD=752. Also, because my delivery is on Sunday, I received another load assignment for Monday. It is a PU in Janesville, WI to Fishers, IN. MT=169 LD=296. Get unloaded in less than 90" and am on my way. Hear they issued "Winter Storm Warnings" for much of GA, SC and NC!!!! More snow!!! Am driving on 301 northbound and after crossing over in SC, here comes the snow. Made it to the Loves in Orangeburg, SC. Snow is falling at a rate of 1-2"\HR. Am watching the local TV news and the weather service is predicting 4-8" of snow. They show people rushing out to the local food stores to stock up on food because of the "great storm" affecting their area. LOL
02.13.10: Very pretty sight!!! Trees are covered with snow. The roads are in very good condition with dry pavement and safe speeds of 65MPH. Made it up to the shipper in Chester. A simple drop and hook. In and out in 30". Started off, went through the detour on I-40 and, of course, ran into some more snow. Nothing serious and no unsafe driving conditions. Made it to Richmond. KY and stopped at the Love's. Didn't want another Arby's so I made a tasty pot-full of homemade soup and hot grilled sandwiches. TASTY!!!!
02.14.10: Surprise!!! Light snow flurries this AM!!! No problems with driving. Appt at the cosignee is until 1800 hrs. Arrive in the area # 1400hrs. Stop at the Pilot in Burns Harbor, IN and get some fuel and a hot shower. Get to the cosignee # 1730 hrs. In the door by 1800 hrs and out by 1900 hrs. Very nice people in the receiving dept!!! Left and drove up to the "J" in S. Beloit and shut down for the night. Had a nice "all you can eat" soup and salad bar and watched some TV. NOTE: I try to eat salads at least 4-6 times per week. I once weighed 340lbs. I am now at 215lbs. I have a terrible family history of heart disease and diabetes along with some instances of premature cardiac deaths in some male relatives. So I watch what I eat. My blood lipids are elevated and I can't exercise as much as I would like because of some injuries I sustained when I was in the service(68-75) so I have to watch what I eat. Time will tell........
02.15.10: Made it to the shipper # 0700hrs. Easy D&H and in and out in 30". I don't deliver until 0800 hrs tomorrow. Made it down to Lebanon, IN at the "J", will get another "soup and salad" , a hot shower, and watch some TV(24 is on tonight!!!). Oh yes, it is snowing now but the roads are in good condition!!! However, south of here is a very different story!!! The local TV news is showing multiple wrecks involving "big trucks" and dozens of vehicles in the ditches!!! Glad I don't have to go any further south!!! I sent in my new PTA and am waiting on my next load assignment.
It's been a good week!!! Since leaving the terminal on 02.06.10, I have 4076 miles plus some extra drop pay. Great!!!!
Drive defensively and be safe out there!!!!
