If Volvo and manufacturers weren't so cheap with parts, the correct build would be with stainless steel...... But plastic wins every time. Junk.

Lol more like they could afford it better because it wouldn't be broken and going down over stupid issues from cheap junk....
This is the exact type of case where cheap .....isn't really cheap in Long run -
Well you're not gonna get an argument from me there, but for amount of time that type of stuff goes it's just not cost effective to manufacture from SS. Same as nuts and bolts, I replace mine when they go with stainless but to build would be crazy dollars.

It's all about quality. Do it once, do it right and you don't need to revisit it.
Making the pumps from stainless would be worth every penny of "initially" added cost..... -
Had a full leakage problem from def pump , no codes on my truck .hope this helps others how to fix the problem instead spending thousands :
