I just bought my son the Trucker a Cobra 29 Black chrome New but with Mods. I thought I was getting him a cool cb. But, Now I read a lot of mods are Crap. I told him it had an Echo install , first thing he says is can it be turned OFF, ha ha. Well, I think I made a bad choice.
Here is what it has.
Brand New Cobra 29 LTD Black Chrome Cb Radio
Upgrades Include:
- Blue Rx Led
- Swing Kit Installed
- Turbo Echo installed in place of the Delta Tune Control
- Delta Tune Control left attached and could easily be put back to stock
- Schottky Diode and 2SC2999 transistor kit installed for a quieter and more sensitive receiver
- Peaked and Tuned
He said his partner is giving him a Wilson 5000 antenna. I also got him an Astatic 636l mic.
Question, should I demod it?
I am a Guitar Amplifier repair tech and do have some skills, but obviously not CB radio experience.
Thanks.
Cobra Mods good or bad ?

Depends on if the shop you bought it from was a good one or not. Who did you buy it from or who did the work on it?
-
I bought it off of Ebay. So I don't know the guy at all. Stupid , I know.
He had 266 100% positive feedback and said he had been fixing and restoring cb's for 15 years.
So it really comes down to whether the guy knew what he was doing? The mods like "Swing mod" and "sensitive receiver mod", " Schottky diode " might be good?
Guess I will have to find out the hard way after I get it installed. Now I need a SWR meter. -
If it was Doug at Custom cb radios then you'll be good to go. I know he sells alot on there and he is a top notch tech. If it's any of the others on there it's a shot in the dark might be good might not.

- Blue Rx Led.......Cool mod.
- Swing Kit Installed...........A hige wast of money but not worth changing unless radio is distorted to others.
- Turbo Echo installed in place of the Delta Tune Control..............If thats how you or him llike a radio to sound then there is nothing wrong with it.
- Delta Tune Control left attached and could easily be put back to stock...........dont do a #### thing on a AM radio anyway so dont worry about it.
- Schottky Diode and 2SC2999 transistor kit installed for a quieter and more sensitive receiver.......some people swear by this mod and although i have nothad this done i think it's a good mod.
- Peaked and Tuned.......only if its done right. Any fool can peak and tune a radio but only a true radio tech can do it right! -
Blue LED's are standard issue on the Chrome and Black Chrome 29's
Swing Kits when done correctly are pretty cool on the low end Cobra line 40 channel rigs.
Turbo Echo is junk IMO,Connex or nothing

Sounds to me like he a got a good radio, I won't get in what the cost was, but, if it has a swing kit, then you may as well buy an amp to go with it.

Well, The Radio looks very good. I opened it up , the work looks good too, Very clean and tight. You can hardly tell it has mods.
I am trying to get a SWR meter now off ebay, so quit out bidding me!
I asked the Seller about the mods and he did offer to remove them , no charge. I opted to leave er B . He did say the swing mod was mostly for people running an amplifier. What, can an Amplifier do ? Which one should I get ? Or none at all ? Do I use the same antenna with an amp ?
My son is a new truck driver, he keeps calling me to ask about the weather where he is headed. Should I have gotten the radio with Weather alert ? Actually , I think he just uses that an excuse to call. He drove in Alaska for a few years, so he is not afraid of a little weather.
Thanks for the replies. I feel better about the radio now.
