I was in a truck about 300 yards behind Michael Rice and saw everything happen from the time the truck left the road to the impact and explosion or cargo and debris.
I grabbed my first responder kit and my fire extinguisher and ran to the scene. I was able to get the fire out which was burning beside the truck cab, but Michael had no pulse and I couldn't help him though I tried and would have done anything in my power if there was even a slight sign of life.
The deepest sympathies from my family and I go out to his family and his friends and co workers. My biggest fear is dying far away from home like that, and in the trucking world it's all too real to us. We are in the top 10 most dangerous jobs because of the hazards we face every minute of our lives out here.
I wish I could have known Michael. This incident will continue to impact me for the rest of my life.
It was very hard to stab a gear and drop the clutch of my truck to leave the scene. A part of me remains there forever.

It hit so hard that the front of the trailer is actually crushed. You can kinda see in the picture, the side was ripped open. The holes weren't very big but the force was so great that it spewed the grain out, bags and all. He's clear off the road and the right lane was covered in grain.

It bothered me so much that I got off on 96 north when I meant to go south and had to stop at the next exit for a few. I knew there was no way the guy survived when I passed the cab.

We've all seen a lot of crash pics involving rigs, but somehow I focused on this one for a lot longer. Don't know if it was the level of sheer devastation or what, but this picture really hit me.
