Old Mental Health Evaluations

    There’s a lot of misinformation out there on this topic so I’ll try to be general. If you don’t know specifics about this particular subject please refrain from confusing those that wish serious answers.

    About 15 years ago I felt pretty down due to some traumatic experiences in life, went and saw a psychiatrist. They put me on antidepressants for maybe 3-4 months or so, been off them since feel fine. Everyone gets the blues from time to time, pretty normal. I wasn’t ever given any formal diagnosis that I know of so when I fill out a medical examiners question form I don’t mark on there depression or anything since I don’t really suffer from it after that rut. For all I know they diagnosed me with schizophrenia, bipolar, and I’m some “nut job”.

    It’s not easy to get information from doctors about mental health diagnosis, especially from years ago. Personally, I feel fine. I do not have a general practitioner doctor but if I retained one, would they have access to this if it’s in a system? Could they possibly tell me? Also who else has access to these records?

    This all concerns me from a legal perspective. If I do have a diagnosis I don’t know about, how do I even know what to answer if questioned when I go to get my DOT card? What kind of crazy system do we have where we as individuals don’t have access to this information? I don’t want my career destroyed or sued because they claimed I lied on a form about information I don’t know about.

    I have heard that if you lie on the DOT medical examiner’s forms you could be sued or charged with crimes. Specifically if you let’s say lied about epilepsy and that medical problem caused you to get into an accident. How would a lawyer know about my past history? Isn’t HIPPA suppose to protect our private health information?

    I just want to provide for myself and my family. Where does our right to privacy end and their encroaching tyranny into our private lives begin?

    No need to mention it or disclose it on the medical questionaire. 15 yrs ago? Haven’t needed the meds since? Forget it. Nobody cares about that. Anti depressant use has become so common, even if you’d been taking them ever since, it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. You can’t list every ache and pain you’ve ever had. Some of the questions are ridiculous. Serious problems like seizures or heart issues are what they’re concerned about. Doesn’t matter if they diagnosed you anyway. It’s only an opinion, not a fact that you have to agree with. Go to a Barber, you’ll get a haircut. Go to a Psychiatrist you’ll get a diagnosis. 3 different Psychiatrist, 3 different diagnoses. That’s their job. Doesn’t mean it’s true.

    Those records are between you and your practitioner, nothing is shared without your consent.
    What you went through is in the past and will stay there. I have been through everything you listed and a whole lot more..you’re normal :)

    Just check off your current status..

    The only possible way it could come out is if you went on a killing spree and someone decided to do some digging..

    I believe many trucking accidents, as well as many accidents committed by cars and pedestrians are actually motivated by suicide desires. Truckers get blamed as being sleepy or irresponsible, but it may have been that they wanted to kill themselves and either succeeded or didn't. People who aren't truckers also have been polled, and it's been found that going in front of a truck and getting killed that way was high on the list of ways they'd consider offing themselves. The industry is filled with stress and hate, and it would be easy for a mentally healthy person to eventually become suicidal driving a truck.

    It's been a year but, it's concerning how mental health issues can impact various aspects of life, including the safety of our roads. The stress and challenges within the trucking industry can definitely take a toll on one's well-being. It's important for both employers and individuals to prioritize mental health support and resources to address these issues.
