    I'm looking at an '03 379 with a Cat MBN 02065 motor. 475hp. 389,000 miles.

I've seen various threads/posts but none directly dealing with this particular motor...just that a couple guys have reprogrammed their ECM's backwards, essentially.

Is this motor any good or no? I test drove the truck but one can tell only so much on a 15 minute drive bobtailing. 28 or so for boost...runs out good otherwise. I don't know a whole lot about Cat's...any input would be appreciated.

Here is the Service History on this engine. ECM download and Oil and coolant samples may help you access this engine better.

It had the normal ESC warranty 5/500 000, not OPT, no overhaul done. It would be a god idea to get an ECM download.

    e500gvr Thanks this.

Still wondering what the differences are between...say...an 00-02 C-15 and an MBN is.

I've seen the moniker...'More Bad News' used once or twice here.

higher compression piston..........different camshaft and injectors. The turbo is different also with a weird wastegate system. Of all the hard parts the camshaft is the piece that needs to be changed the most in my opinion. The ECM programming is very bad, but it isn't that hard to upgrade it to a better file for more fuel mileage and power

Hey thanks! This was what I was looking for. Is the motor a piece of crap or is it alright? The truck is a daycab, to be used on dump trailer work and that's where it came from. 13sp, 3:90 rears. Hopefully not a low rpm motor like the twin turbo ACCERT.

It'd be turn-key for me basically...unfortunately a good properly set-up daycab is hard to find and when found is usually gone in a flash.

If you back date to a 6nz you need to change the cam it will run horrible with the mbn cam probably due to the double step for the two phase injection on the inj lobe.
I did one a while ago and just got the cam changed to the 10r7155 what a differance!!!!! I tryed the 7cz600 brakesaver file and it ran like a bear but i put just the 550 in it seeing its a company truck. Any way change the cam if you back date to a 6nz.

Eh, I don't need 1000hp...just something that'll be reliable. I guess my main question is that is this a reliable motor as it sits?

I'd be stepping out of a 1997 E7-427 Mack and into this truck...I'm hoping for some decent power+good jake brake...two things I pretty much lack now. So forgive me for not knowing much about the Cat motor...I hope the learning curve isn't too tough. Reading through this board there seems to be some pretty knowledgable people here and I'm just looking for some input. Thanks!
