The wonders of trucking! Drivers attempting to plan out their schedule with uncooperative shippers, receivers, and the general motoring public!

I read this as a statement against the 14 hour work limit. With the restriction of the split sleeper berth provision (only a 8 2 split is permissible under the current rules) drivers no longer have the flexibility to stop for a nap and wait for rush hour to die down.

The DOT really messed up when they messed with the split sleeper rule.

As far as other "methods" used to git er done you could view the following thread. It was written in an attempt to expose the every day cheating going on and the possible consequences of said actions.

    http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...rs-advice/33752-exposing-log-book-tricks.html

I have received lots of criticism for starting this thread but my intent was to drag these practices out in the open so they might be changed.

I am glad you do to Mike as I get this grief as well because I am a log manager and wow when I mention run legal on here l.o.l.. Hang in there :) one day the one's bickering about it will understand when they are in handcuffs being dragged out from their trailer heading to prison.:biggrin_25510::biggrin_25525:

Actually I must correct you on this, the split break option still allows a driver to stop for 2 hrs or more, however this 2 hrs does not extend the 14 hr clock but it allows the driver to only take 8 hrs at the end of his/her 14 hr clock instead of the original 10, hence it's a 10 hr break, now understand after the 8 you don't have 11 hrs to drive and you need to learn split breaking before you just go off the above info I listed, it's way more detailed but very simple.

I actually feel you are safer using the split break option because you stop for 2 or 8 hrs in between your 11 hrs of driving.:biggrin_25522:

    Yatista Thanks this.

Believe it or not I am aware of this. You CAN stop ANYTIME you want but it WILL count against that 14 hour clock (unless you spend 08 hours in the sleeper).

My point was under the old rules there was no 14 hour rule limiting "when" we drove based on an arbitrary start time. Once we begin our day we are in essence under the gun. We have up to 14 hours to squeeze 11 hours of driving time in. Delays at shippers, receivers, traffic, construction, etc all whiddle our time away. Had the DOT kept their nose out of the split sleeper berth rule we would be able to stop for a couple of hours AND that time would not count against the 14 hour rule at all.

Based on the comments at the so called "listening sessions" flexibility is the watch word. Hopefully the pencil pushers will realize they goofed and change the split sleeper berth rule back to the way it was.

Of course when you have bureaucrats making the rules who knows what they will screw up next.

What makes you think he's concerned with your welfare. His concern is for the safety of those who are not violating the laws and regulations. His concern for your welfare would require that you are in that group. Are You???

Interesting thread. Thanks to y'all for contributing. There are definitely carriers that are requiring drivers to log legal even though they dispatch them on runs that can not be run legally. I've seen that up close and personal and had one hundred dollars withdrawn from my paycheck for every recorded violation of HOS as I tried to both make my deliveries on time and have the fuel stops and tolls, etc. accurately recorded in the log. The carrier would withdraw one hundred dollars if I was late for a delivery too so I was caught between these penalties. Instead of allowing a carrier to do this it'd be more just if the govt would enforce the law to stop carriers from penalizing drivers and to guarantee drivers a living wage w/ overtime pay at time-and-a-half.

Odd you say that, as I am not allowed by the company to adjust brakes, being tired is what, 0.04% wrecks in a CV, and poorly maintained, well, last time I checked, that was the company's truck, not mine.

Sure it's nice to blame the driver, but until you start arresting and fining dispatchers and company employees (shopworkers and office employees) stuff ain't gonna change.

You want to completely stop BS logs? Remove piecemeal pay-by-mile, and go to hourly.

Wrong. With no revenue coming in, the higher ups would write new rules for you to enforce in the name of "safety." That's what they would tell you and that's what you would believe without question. The truth is, they want money and they will use the system they created to generate it by whatever means they deem necessary.
