You are going to need to comply with CA requirements for your 4 axle truck and have it inspected in order to obtain an overweight permit in California. When they do the inspection and you pass, they will issue you an inspection report with a number. On that report it will list your axle spacings for truck and trailer and list weights for green and purple weight roads. Typical purple weights will be 20k single 46725 tandem 59000 or 60000 depending on axle spacing.
To certify your truck it has to level on a single valve, cannot be adjustable(no regulator), not liftae from inside the truck and must equalize to within 10% plus it minus with the other axles in the group. It must have 4 tires - generally or they will cut you down to only green weight (51-54k on a tridem).
You will likely need to permit your empty trailer to get your load or permit your empty trailer out of the state after you unload - it will not meet the KP to rear axle length restrictions.
You will not be able to run a tight 4 axle group or an east coast 3+1, so don’t even think about loads that weigh much over 80k.
You should be a lot more concerned with how you get through Arizona to California as a 7 axle.truckdad, brian991219, Oxbow and 3 others Thank this. -
Oh - your truck also needs to be CARB compliant
Those are the rules -
Great, so question on that.... That certification is a one time thing to be done ? to be able to obtain permits in a future?
And I haven't gotten to Arizona yet, whats the issue with that state ? -
The main issue is how much weight you can get. You can get Class C Tridem Permit that will allow 59168 on 9' and 60000 on 10' axle spacing. Class C Tridem Permit is limited to I-10 I-19 I-40 US-93 from Nevada state line to I-40. BTW try google, it knows all...
brian991219 Thanks this. -
And you overall gross weight must be under 140kbrian991219 and Oxbow Thank this.

With a 4 axle tractor you will need an inspection for each permitted load.

Hi, Im sorry for opening old tread. Do you need an inspection with 4 axle tractor for legal (80k gross) weights too? What about tridem trailer?
Thanks
