Wading into an area where I know nothing. How does $300/day, $50 per diem and hotels, sound for a regional, part-time Class B position? 1099 of course.

It sounds like a scam to me. 1099s will cheat you like they are cheating the IRS. If you don't save 30% of your settlement to pay income tax, self-employment tax, and workers comp you will be pulling the pin on an IRS tax owed/investigation "grenade".

No scam. I'm basically retired now and selectively looking for work to keep my idle hands busy. It's a local company that I know and I'll be taking one or two short runs per month.

1099 is a no go, especially at that pay rate. Many do better than that as w-2 employees. Why do they want to run you as a 1099 ?

1099 is a scam, the "employer" is dodging their tax obligation to the IRS/Social Security and is subject to being closed by the IRS after a phone call about the company to the IRS. Unless you are providing the truck and you are picking the trips, the company is fraudulently claiming you as an independent contractor. As you may know, once you retire and once you exceed a $18-19k income limit you pay a significant penalty on your Social Security benefits. And there is still the matter of your are required to pay all taxes from your 1099 revenue, which many drivers only learn after failing to do so during the first year and getting hit by the IRS. If you work 1099 you should be paying taxes quarterly, but first-timer 1099 drivers often don't because they have never ever worked, except as a W-2 employee where the employer does the withholding. So 1st time 1099 drivers may go 1-3 years just spending their "paycheck" before the IRS finds them and demands thousands of back taxes, interest, penalties in the next 30-90 days. The IRS will get their money and they will make borrowing money from a loan shark look like child's play. Ask me how I know. A $300 deficiency in taxes paid caused by a bad account cost me $3000 2 years and 350 days later. The IRS will get their money and they don't care about any story you think will make them go away.

$300 per day seems far too high a rate for a legitimate company to pay for Class B work. If you have experience owning-operating AND working Class B you may understand the normal range of daily revenue. Does the $300/day cover fuel and costs or is it coming to you while the "employer" pays all expenses?
The info seems like a Craig's List scam to me.

There are driver leasing companies, basically CDL Temporary Work agencies that supply drivers to legit companies and the drivers is paid hourly. I think TransForce, Driver Source, Driver Solutions are some of them in my area. Lots of the CL ads in my area point to work at one of the driver leasing companies. BTW, the driver doesn't lease anything and is never responsible for any expense of the truck. The Lease in driver leasing is between the legit trucking company and the driver leasing company. You report your availability to the driver leasing company for the next week and they assign you work on those days. You get to pick how often you work and probably what companies you work for.

I hear ya on the pitfalls of 1099 work. I understand the pitfalls. This is ALL expenses paid. I sit in the seat and get the truck from Point A to Point B. I've tried the temp agencies. Unfortunately, I live in a freight desert.

Not quite sure what you meant by this statement. It seems to be saying the same thing, only twice.

"Does the $300/day cover fuel and costs or is it coming to you while the "employer" pays all expenses?"

Amen to the IRS and the egregious penalties for small mistakes. When my oldest daughter first went to college I made a minor mistake dealing with the 1099T regarding tuition to the tube of about 400$. After they got done with me that 400$ honest mistake cost me about 2500$. Again OP, if they want you to run they should be doing it with you as a W-2 employee. No reason to do it any other way.
