My wife has taken the train a few times, Chicago to Sacramento.
We live in sw MO so she flies from Springfield to Chicago. She’s taken the northern route and the southern route. Northern route, have to change trains in Portland and then south to Sac. Southern route change trains in L.A. and then north to Sac. It’s about a 3 1/2 to 4 day trip door to door.
She gets the private room (but it’s a community head at the end of the car). She said with a room on the lower deck that you will feel less sway. You can have meals brought to room or you can go to dining car.
It is more expensive than flying but if you have the time it’s way more relaxing.
