Im not a driver yet but want to know more about on board power.I want to drive OTR.Im getting the impression that about 400 watts is the norm and some companies and others will let you supply a larger one for them to install.I dont know much about what ya can and cant do in your truck but things like toaster ovens, coffee pots, skillets and such come to mind.I know there are many dc powered things too and its probably smart to buy as many as you can but it sure would be nice to have some juice when needed.Anyone here have any advice?Examples of what you do?I would also like to have an idea of an average size fridge in these things. Are they like the little motel ones that never really make ice?Smaller?Be as specific as you like.thanks.

the best thing to do is look at all the things that you will run in the truck. a toaster oven can pull as much as 1500 watts which will shut down a 400 watt inverter keep in mind that if you have a tv 150 watts a dvd player 90 to 110 watts and anything else running you need a good inverter trty about a 1750 to a 2500 watt inverter that should give you no problems. i run a 5000 watt some might think its over kill but it keeps every thing going. i also have a APU that works when the truck is not moving which is very rare thus the need for the inverter. good luck-jt

i have a aims inverter check out inverters r us on the internet they seem to have some good price's also check out the customer review's on the one you want to buy good and bad reviews can help you choose the right one. unless you are an expert installer let somebody with the knowhow install it for you that way ya dont crisppy the truck or your self for that matter. remember the old saying you get what you pay for if you buy a cheap inverter thats what you will have so spend the little extra so you dont have problems later. good luck-jt

Great info,Iguess the next question is,dont these things put a hurtin on your truck though?I wonder if companies have restrictions.

most inverters will charge your batts and the inverter will shut down if the amps drop below the point of no return for starting your truck. -jt

I use Thor inverters. They will even let you speak to their engineers and they will answer all of your questions. They also give you factory direct pricing. I have a Thor 3000 watt unit in my truck and they sold it to me for $290.00. I have had it for three years now and it works great. It even has a USB port too. Everyone of their units has a 15% reserve built into them. My 3000 watt unit will actually put out 3500 watts continuous. Below is the contact information of the guy I dealt with over there. He was really good about answering all of my questions.
