    SPN-4364 FMI 18

Fault will clear but returns within 150 miles. Only other codes are non-related. (Body controller, data bank battery, audible alarm)
Recently changed EGR cooler and valve and nox out sensor to address those codes.

Scanner says regen not required but will accept forced. During regen all nox in and out levels are normal. Tech says that while driving with the scanner plugged in that nox in levels reach 1000ppm and then drop to -80. No codes for nox in sensor showing, even in history.

    Sound familiar to anyone?

    Thanks in advance as always.

Drained tank and filled with box DEF, new in/out NOx sensors, new EGR cooler, (what put me in the shop in the first place), no crystal build up in exhaust system anywhere, new doser. Soot level 11%.

I just don't get it! CEL comes back on with this 4364 code after anywhere from 200 to 250 miles every time no matter what I do.

Any chance this is an exhaust manifold issue and the code gets triggered only after it heats up? I can't think of anything else to replace.

Someone needs to check the freeze frame data. That is the data captured at the instant the code was set. Not every problem sets a code. There can be performance issues and a code does not set. Almost never as easy as Code 1 replace part A, Code 2 replace part F. The best way to check the sensor would be with a scope and check the waveform, though many don't know how. Using the Cummins diagnostic steps is the best bet. I did see a video with an inactive code for the Nox In sensor, the ppm reading was moving around quite a bit, so much that the data showed this:

After the sensor was replaced the reading stabilized. Your Nox in level appears to moving around a good bit too given the 1000ppm and -80.

Just saw your update after posting mine. So Nox in sensor not the issue. Problems in the engine etc. can cause issues in the after treatment system. Replacing the whole after treatment system would not fix some issues. Not that you want to do that.
I know you don't have a Cummins but they have some free info.... Most systems even from diff engine makers are the same or very similar. You can get a free Cummins Quick Serve Online account. Then find Code 3582 which is the Code for SPN 4364 FMI 18. Then see what the Possible Solutions are for that code.

"Your Nox in level appears to moving around a good bit too given the 1000ppm and -80".

That problem resolved to normal levels after the new input sensor. Thought for sure we had fixed it until about mile 230 today. Turbo possibly? I'm just baffled.

Most of the info I'm finding online is for Cummins or Detroit. Same principle though.

Here is what someone else said for the same code. I saw several say it ended up being the SCR. But it can be so many things. Reading will tell you this is one of the toughest codes to solve.

What's causing my repeat code 3582?
My shop has done several of them for repeat 3582 codes. It could just be a NOx sensor on the fritz, but more than likely if you have the NH3 sensor still installed it'll end up being your SCR cat.

It's back at the shop now. We'll dig deeper on Monday. Thank you for the ideas. I'll post more as I go.

I’ve had that code. It they don’t find anything simple, it’ll come on more often. For the age of the truck in could be worn out SCR catalyst.
Mine they changed the whole emissions box and also replaced the six injectors as they were over fueling.
