Hey truckers. I'm looking to buy my first truck, a Kenworth.
Most of them either have a Cat or Cummins engine... I've always heard Cat is the way to go, but what's you opinion???
Thanks for the input/advice

umm.....you might wanna get some experiance before buying a truck
"if it aint a CAT, it must be a dog" -
This guy. I said the first truck I buy, not the first I will drive...
That wasn't my question anyway... -
I say Cat all the way.
ronron85 Thanks this. -
Click the search tab above for CAT or Cummins & watch the conversations that follow in the threads over the last couple years. There is a ton of info already here on all variations of the C15 & ISX.
Also, ask what your local mechanic prefers to work on for the things you cannot do. Does he have more experience with one or the other? Could make a big difference.Last edited: Feb 23, 2010

KW and CAT.
Kinda like hand in a glove.
Unfortunately CAT got out of the on-road market for 2010. Fortunately there is a lot of great used iron still on the roads. -
I'm a rock solid KW man...But you couldn't give me a CAT. I would never have one in a truck again since I bought my first C-15 (POS).
I ran Cats for many years starting with the 1693 and ending with the C-15 (POS).
I had a 3406-A 3406-B and a 3406-E but after a couple of years with the C-15...I'm done with CAT!
I run Cummins now and am very happy with the change. -
I ran two identical trucks.
The one with a cummins had a 525 fresh overhaul. The 500 CAT with over 800,000 miles on it would out run the cummins with ease. Both 13 spds, both same rear ends and tires.
Some folks have good experiences, some have bad. Its all in personal choice. -
My issues aren't with how they pull....It's with the poor quality that CAT has put out the last few years.
That and the fact that they are so expensive to repair when compared to other makes....Parts are stupidly expensive. -
I wouldn't buy any of the emissions engines and I will agree that the yellow paint is really costly.
